I just bought The Gunslinger the other day! Can't wait to finish my current ongoing books and getting started on it

Let me know what you think of it! One scene in particular blew me away and was unlike anything Ive ever experienced in a book before.

The Dark Tower was such a great read. I wish I could wipe it from my memory so that I could experience it for the first time again.

The first 4 books in The Dark Tower progressively get better, culminating in the amazing 4th book. Then each book progressively gets worst until the abysmal ending.

The newest Dark Tower book is pretty solid. Its not much related to the main story tho.

she hasn't even had the chance to form an opinion yet. it's a fine comment to make among people who have already finished. but why poison the whole thing for someone before she even starts?

take your own advice.

I recommend anyone should read it. The first 4 books are worth it. But its no big surprise to anyone that Stephen King drops the ball for the ending. He usually does. He's famous for it.

The Dark Tower is probably my favorite book series.

the first book felt kinda "dreamy", at first, and I wasn't sure if it was for me, but it started getting my interest towards the end.

the series also started having a different tone with the second book, and I really enjoyed it from there.

He wrote the first book when he was like 19 I believe.

The tone does change afterward, but for the better.

There are a lot of nods to his other works such The Stand and Salem Lot in The Dark Tower that will go over your head if you haven't read his other stuff. But its not a huge deal.

Some of my other favorites by him are The Shining, It, The Stand, The Tommyknockers

Yeah, I actually know a bit about it already cause my college roommate was a huge King fan. You kinda learn through osmosis. Really wanna read The Stand, too, but it's so intimidating...

Honestly that is probably the one book you should read before The Dark Tower because it does tie into it a decent amount. Its really good anyways.

This.

It's not essential but you'll definitely appreciate certain parts of The Dark Tower more if you've read The Stand first.

Oh. It's so big though and I don't know the next time I can go to the library/bookstore cause of Covid.
If I can get to the Gunslinger before the stores/libraries open up, I'll read it first.
If I can get my hands on a copy of The Stand before then, I'll read that first.
Deal?

I've actually been thinking of re-reading The Stand myself. I picked up the complete and uncut edition a while back but haven't gotten around to it yet.

A book that size will be good for me. I'm laid off from work with fuck all to do except drink and shitpost on the internet all day.

Thankfully Ive read The Stand and know a decent amount about his other works just through pop culture.

I might actually consider re-reading it myself. I dont remember all the details that well, though I have seen it referenced a few times in my Dark Tower read-through so I do remember most of the big stuff, presumably.

Speaking of Stephen King and his endings, The Stand SPOILERS God that was one of the worst endings to anything ever. The way the story was being told I thought it was building up to something much more clever.

Yes the ending of The Stand was probably his worst. And he has a few stinkers at the end.
