Is it about AMD or Intel these days? What even is the difference anymore?

Are we still on Micro ATX cases? How do I cement my virginity, how many styish gills and RGB internal lights will I need?

I'd say I wanna spend around...$800, give or take. I have a micro atx case I could repurpose, maybe even a PSU I could keep using (corsair 550W 80 Plus). Hell I may as well keep the HD and SSD.

So I need:
  • Mobo
  • RAM
  • CPU
  • GPU
  • Case, maybe

Is it? I mean although I say my PC is a potato, it does all my important productive tasks as fast as I need, and really only starts to show it's specs when I try to run games like Monster Hunter World. Also it cost me like $400.

Anyway, I want to be able to run games coming out at the moment on good settings. Not ultra ultra, but you know. It would be nice to run them on my 32 inch monitor without reducing the resolution too much.

Is your monitor 1080p? 2k? 4k?

get speccy, run it and take a screenshot.
careful when installing it, it usually comes with bloatware as an optional install

Edit: ignore the LG tv, not working off my usual monitor atm.

TBH you could probably get away with just getting a new GPU and another 8GB of RAM, even a 2060 GPU would make a world of difference

Ouch, that FX-6300. You'll be happy with whatever you upgrade to!

Anyway, AMD and Intel both make good products now. AMD is often better if you're using applications that need a lot of cores/threads since you can get a lot more of them for cheaper than with Intel. Intel CPUs generally still are best for gaming because they have better per core performance. At your $800 budget I'd look into an AMD build since you get more bang for your buck.

You might also want a new SSD since the new M.2 NVME ones are a lot faster than the old SATA ones. If you don't want to spend the money your old SSD is fine, though.

Check out https://pcpartpicker.com if you want ideas for your build and to put one together for yourself.

Thanks guys!

Yeah the GPU is a bit sad, lol. I'm happy enough with the SSD. The main reason I was considering a new build was that someone said my mobo and CPU were a bit old also...

There are a bunch of YouTube channels that you can watch to give you an idea as to what you can afford and look for. I linked two videos that helped me understand what to budget for each part when I build my rig in a few months. If you can repurpose your parts then you can spend a little more elsewhere. Also you'll want a new ssd to put a fresh copy of windows 10.

The CPU is pretty old but CPUs can last a long time, though 8 years is pushing the limit.

I'd advise a new build but focus on the mobo and CPU and get a midrange GPU for about 300 then in 2-3 years upgrade it again to something that should last you the next 5 years

Can't advise on the PSU you have, not too familiar with them. You got a budget?
In either case:

That CPU wasn't very good when it came out years ago, at least for gaming. The way AMD designed it gave it weak single core performance. I would definitely recommend an upgrade to a modern AMD CPU as you said.

His PSU is probably still fine. Corsair sources good PSUs by and large. Seeing the specific one he has and how long he's been using it would help, though. They do degrade over time.

unpopular opinion but you should wait unless you're itching to play right now.

new hardware is on the horizon and while new hardware is "always" on the horizon, this is the stuff that's also powering the hardware in next-gen consoles and with parity comes (hopefully)competing price points on top of the improved hardware itself.

Yup there are some new AMD CPUs coming out soon, and B550 motherboards (PCIe 4.0). Also if you hold onto your graphics card toward the end of the year you may be able save a few bucks on a graphics card you would buy now or buy a better one for the same amount you're budgeting for when the next gen cards (RTX 3080 TI or AMD big navi) is released.

I get what you guys are saying, although honestly that sentiment has always been the case every time I've looked at upgrading my PC over like..the last 10 years. "wait another month, the new card /mobo/cpu comes out soon".
