why doesnt the police force screen applicants to keep people like the guy in the video from becoming cops?

What that cop did was completely unnecessary and he should, at the very least, be fired.

It's pathetic how the usual defenders in these topics always demand higher standards from the citizens than the cops. "Oh, the kid should have kept calm and not resisted arrest, have a perfect knowledge of laws so that if there is abuse, he can, later, do something about it." The cop has to arrest a kid who's less than half his size and poses no physical threat? "it's ok to punch him a few times in the heat of the moment, it's a stressful job."

You think you're defending a brother in an unfairly maligned and dangerous job who was just trying to keep the peace and lacked knowledge on the situation. But you're waaaay too stuck in the current police mindframe. Police policy and current law authorizing this type of treatment is irrelevant. Current law and policy is incredibly warped and biased toward police and allow things that most citizens would consider abuse if done to them.

Most people look at this and consider it abuse. You must understand that. Citing policy is not going to help you and relying on "this is okay under the current way that we do things where every single thing is seen from the cop's view and we take them at their word on everything" just cements that you're out of touch with the people you're supposed to be serving.

There are some people that reflexively criticize cops even in the most justified situation. That doesn't give you the excuse to do the same and reflexively defend cops in every situation though. Because it's far more dangerous when you do it than when us armchair experts do it. Because you have the authority and you have the gun. Therefore you have to be held to a higher, not a lower standard. Police cannot be above questioning.

To be fair, with proper training, a chokehold is one of the least damaging ways to control any person.

FFS, Ive been choked out on the mats countless times and done the same to others. If your technique is correct, its a better alternative than having to use blunt force.

BJJ should be heavily incorporated into every departments defensive tactics training. Excessive force complaints will drop drastically.

While what the juvenile did was obviously wrong, and he admitted as much, the officers actions went beyond the scope of what was necessary.

Apparently, the kid handed over the cigarettes upon initial contact. At that point, why would you care to pursue it any further? You stopped the kid from smoking, and he lost whatever money he paid the adult.

Go ID the adult and ruin his day for buying kids cigarettes if youve really got a hard-on for this stuff. Hes the real issue.

Nobody is saying you cant question the police. You get quite the opposite on this board too. Ive criticized other cop videos on here too, this board foams at the mouth for every chance to do it. Ive already said I would have not punched the kid.

The kid slapped the handcuffs away and refused to be taken into custody. Thats a felony in some states. He lied about his age and got treated like an adult. You guys are mad about facts that came out AFTER everything was said and done. Use of force incidents never look pretty on camera. Especially one where the OP is outright lying about it. The use of force happened because of the resistance not because he was smoking. The cop should get control and tactics training when someone is down. Like a stirring a pot technique to get his arms.

Im not sure where its okay to physically resist lawful detainment where the cuffs go flying several feet away. Ive never arrested somebody that wasnt resisting and somehow my handcuffs went flying. Ive also never had anyone that wasnt resisting arrest, ball up his arms and under his body.

The proper thing to do was sit on the kid and wait for backup to arrive if possible. This escalated to a point because the kid did an illegal activity, refused to identity himself, and refused to be taken into custody
