They were able to open a window from the outside. I didnt open that window. The door was also left open, and my gate. They didnt take anything that I can see. I think I scared them away when I went to investigate with a knife. Somehow, I didnt actually see him. Should I file a police report?

No, there's nothing they will do unfortunately except waste your time.

Sorry, I climbed through the wrong window last night.

In all seriousness, yes I would report to the police that someone broke into your house.

Because they can't do anything. Think about it, what is the point? Especially since there are no stolen goods to return. They aren't going to dust for prints and get the blacklight out lol

The police literally can't and won't do anything.

You can call the police if you want it on the record in case it happens again. But the cops won't do much anyway. They might dust for finger prints that's about it.

They won't, especially with no stolen property. The police can't do much about any minor crime unless they are right there when it occurs.

Maybe later on he'll realize something was stolen. A police report documenting the incident will come in handy for insurance.

Also, it doesn't hurt to alert the police about someone breaking into houses in the area. It's likely they won't do much, but it won't hurt anything and could help to report it.

And, yeah, maybe they didn't do any physical or property damage, but when you report it to the police, it just might give them some help on a robbery or other activity nearby. The people who say don't call are the same types of neighbors of serial killers who never suspected anything

Get a gun, security cameras, a home alarm system, and signs in your yard. It'll cost you around $1000 total, and you'll never have any issues like this again.

$0 stolen/damaged 0 effort will be taken by police. Its a fact, don't bother doing anything other than learning a lesson and secure your home better, invest in better security.

I've had my car broken into. I don't keep anything in the car, hence nothing was stolen. Called cops, reported it, and that was the last I ever heard from them.

Was rear-ended hit and run in a major city streets (seattle) with multiple camera intersections and the car that did it was very specific (Mustang). Slight damage to the bumper- reported it to cops, nothing ever came out of it. No follow up, nothing. Should be noted, same streets I got a traffic camera ticket for not stopping long enough to take a right turn (I think 2 seconds was how long I stopped).

This would be the only good reason to file a report. But nothing seems gone. If something was taken, it was minor and he probably wouldn't ever know. Not going to file an insurance claim for a stolen towel or something

Also, it doesn't hurt to alert the police about someone breaking into houses in the area. It's likely they won't do much, but it won't hurt anything and could help to report it.

It such a waste of time though. They take forever with this shit. My car window had broken windows once. I filed a report like a dumbass, like what could they do? And it wasted a good portion of my day

Cops can't do anything about this kind of stuff

I have guns. I grabbed a knife because it was faster and I didnt think someone was actually inside because I didnt hear glass breaking. But yes, I should get security cameras now. 100%.

This, it let's then know that things are happening in the area. Sure you may never hear of it but when others houses get broken into as well. They will have a idea of what houses they are hitting and eventually catch them. It won't do anything for you but it can help the police in finding them or letting then know to be on alert for houses being broken into in the area.

File a report even if it is futile. It adds data to the crime statistic and can maybe put more cop patrols in your area

Cams are dirt cheap.
Cameras are pretty cheap if you want to get internet-connected cameras (like Wyze, starting at like $20/camera). But to be secure, you might want to consider PoE cameras, which will run you about $200 to start, then $50+/camera. No matter what camera you buy, the night vision is going to be very bad. So buy yourself some infrared blasters as well, like this:

we have to install those locks on the windows. only way in is breaking em and if they do they'll learn the loud noise of a gun. they only get one warning shot (if it's a castle law state).
