Go outside for a few mins and watch the sky if you have never witnessed a shooting star. This applies to people the USA. It will peak in a few hours, around 3 to 4 am EST

15 to 20 per hour average, look toward Venus, which is typically close to the moon and the brightest star in the sky.

Venus is to the west atm isn't it? If that's the case I won't see much unless I go for a hike up the hill behind my house.

Nah not at all. I kinda dig astronomy and whatnot, I have a decent telescope.

It always seems to happen for me when it's overcast but it's a clear night tonight. About to bring a few beers and my folding chair out on the lawn for an hour.

You'll rarely catch a good glimpse of Venus and Merrury but Jupiter is one big huge fat ball of fuck you can gawk at.

meteor showers sound fun, right up until you spend an hour looking at the sky and wondering if the very few streaks of light you see are real or imagined...

Only thing frustrating about these events is you mostly catch them with your peripheral vision and it's typically not exactly where you are focused.

This needs to be bumped. I'm heading outside and if just ONE mountain cat attacks i'll have Mabus BANNED from this site. It's a promise.

Seriously it's really amazing letting your eyes adjust to the stars and start seeing random flashes or light that are actually going like 50k mph

You might even catch a flying saucer.

One more bump as they can still be seen tonight also. I witnessed about 7 late last night, one was super bright and they stated that seeing a fireball meteor may be possible, which can mildly illuminate the darkness.

I've been using my telescope nearly every day since the quarantine started

was stoked about the lyrids but Monday it was too cloudy and this morning I wasn't able to see much from my backyard...didn't try too hard.

I managed a beautiful view of jupiter, saturn, mars, and the moon near each other last week but missed a photo op

You'll rarely catch a good glimpse of Venus and Merrury but Jupiter is one big huge fat ball of fuck you can gawk at.

Are you talking about in a telescope or in general? Mercury is definitely tough and the best you can really hope for is seeing its transit across the sun if you have the right filters

Venus though is pretty easy to spot (brightest star in the sky) and while details on it suck through a scope, you can easily make out its various phases.

Mars does suck through a scope unless its at opposition

Jupiter is good - managed a pic with its moons in it as well and saw some good cloud banding...no red spot. Opposition is coming in July so there will be great views of it soon.

Saturn is the best because of the rings but its just so much farther away than jupiter so its tinier. My scope picked up the detail pretty nicely so I was stoked about that.

This guy is a decent follow for some cool images....he's likely using gear that'll run around 10k for his setup I'd imagine

but for $300 you can get a telescope that'll make out saturns rings...just won't be able to take a nice photo of it
