rap is dope, and whatever is the most popular is cool with me. but rock/metal is perfectly fine. 7 of my top 10 of this year are rock/metal.

I live near Detroit and before the quarantine hit I'd have a much easier time finding 'rock' oriented local bands playing than rappers. Don't get me wrong, it was still easy to find rap/hip-hop shows to go to, but 99% of bars and smaller venues (200-300 people) hosted guitar/bass/drum bands because those ALWAYS draw more people.

Rap is more mainstream, yeah, but hit the local scenes and it'll be the opposite. Also, this is just personal preference, but seeing live music feels way more organic than going to a rap concert.

I listen to rap more but Ive never seen the point of going to a rap concert. I look at rap pretty much like the Beatles did their late discography output - its just a studio entity.

You got examples of these rap songs with melodies?

I suspect we're talking about different things here.
we're not, any type of melody you like in rock exists in rap

I've been to some really good ones.. each genre has their merits, and standard guitar music can greatly benefit/expand if they utilize some of the recording techniques used in rap.

If I'm being honest? Kinda yeah. I don't have that whole attitude of rap is crap like I did when I was a kid, but it kinda sucks when I talk to people about popular music, it's always rap. I like some of it, but the stuff I have to hear on the charts is mostly terrible.

When I graduated, rock, rap, and pop were all equally popular so it was easy to talk about any genre, but now unless your circle listen to what you do, it's a lot of rap.

I get the feeling TC is only asking this question out of some perverse hope that people really are sad and hurt by Rocks declining status.

No, TC, I really dont think Rock fans generally care about rap being popular or not. Never, not even once, have I heard a legit Rock fan complain about it nowadays. They play in their garage with their friends, listen to old albums and maybe practice the guitar at school. I am sure you will find exceptions, as with anything else.

The best music in any genre has been underground for at least 20+ years and the mainstream stuff has always either been terrible or pushed to promote some social/political agenda so whatever's "popular" is irrelevant to me.

This goes for rock, rap, metal, and anything really.
