imo I think 3&K is the best. its the longest game of the original series, I like blue spheres, i like the addition of knuckles and I enjoy that act 1 and 2 are different from each other (unlike 2)

The last third of Sonic 2 is pretty bad. Metropolis, Sky Chase, Sky Fortress, and the final boss all kinda suck. I don't like Oil Ocean much either. I just don't think there's that many bad levels S3&K and it's twice as long.

S3&K easily

The levels of S3&K are just better than the levels of S2, and also the fact that S3&K allows you to save means the game never starts to drag on like S2 does.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the better game (and certainly a lot more ambitious).

That said, Sonic 2 is a favorite of mine.

I like Sky Chase and Sky Fortress but I don't like Marble, Carnival, Lava and the sand one with ghosts all that much heh. So I find Sonic 2 to be more consistent.

To some extent, I don't even know why Sonic 3 and Knuckles is so highly regarded.
Having said that, maybe because I had Sonic 3 and didn't get the extension until it came out.
