They didn't even enter the market with the Master System - at least, not domestically:

I added a Master System to my collection back in like 2013 & the original Phantasy Star is still the only game I own for it; game's a bit tedious, but it has its charm & it's a remarkable technical achievement for 1987.

What the fuck so Nintendo and Sega both released their first ever console on the same exact date?

The Master System/Game Gear Sonic games are interesting, and Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Chaos are both actually good, weirdly enough.

The Master System was much better than the NES with arcade ports. Ports of After Burner, Outrun, and Double Dragon on the SMS were really good.

Yup, both were rivals that launched on the same day July 15, 1983 in Japan

Sega's SG-1000 was released on the same day as the Nintendo Famicom.

The Famicom was obviously superior and the Japanese Market went to Nintendo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_generation_of_video_game_consoles

The SG-1000 was a poor competitor to the Nintendo Famicom, so Sega went back to the drawing board quickly.

Sega's quick response was the (Sega Mark III AKA Master System)

That's how they were trying to catch up.

The Sega Master System was technically superior to the Famicom, but by the time they released, Nintendo had already built up market share and a significant library along with word of mouth.

Don't even mention the Atari 7800, those guys were a joke in the industry when Nintendo Smoked every competition in the 3rd Generation of Game Consoles / 8-bit era.

Global Sales:
Nintendo sold 61.91 million (Japan: 19.35 million; America's: 34 million; Elsewhere: 8.56 million)
Sega sold 17.8 million (Japan: 1 million; US: 2 million; Brazil: 8 million; Western Europe: 6.8 million)
