I am coming towards the end of my time as a grad school student (Masters in Political Science) and my capstone that I am working on is covering the minimum wage movement, arguing that we should increase it to a living wage. That being said, I have been instructed to show both sides of this issue, and I was wondering if any of you have any thoughts (or better yet any sources) on this topic.

Anyone?

Of course it should be, or at least, it should be fixed to some rate to control for infliation and cost of living. Otherwise, it's pointless.

That vastly depends on where you'd want/be willing to live. I really think some type of rent controls need to be implemented over the easier-to-discuss minimum wage issue though myself.

You would have to define a living wage, and the definition would vary depending on where you are. A living wage in a small town is vastly different from one in a large city, as well as Louisiana is different from California. Minimum wage would also be just as much as, if not more, than some hourly wages for actual skilled labor. Given how people think, this would likely equate to a reduction in many skilled fields because why learn a trade when you can clean toilets for just as much? Minimum wage should be left in the 8-9 dollar range and more should be done to get people out of those unskilled, low risk jobs.

I think a plan to increase minimum wage faster than previously is good, but an instant jump is like telling a ton of small businesses to go fuck themselves. You need time to figure out how reflect increased wages in price increases, and customers need time to adjust to the increased prices.

Minimum wage laws are good because they make sure workers get paid a market rate when the job market itself is not perfectly competitive. That benefit can outweigh the problems a minimum wage creates as a price floor. Most modern studies show small minimum wage increases having little impact on employment and prices.

A living wage is something else entirely. The definition of a "fair" wage changes from something determined by the market to an arbitrary number that some politician thinks will win them votes. By placing a high price floor on wages, or a price ceiling on goods and services (like rent control) you are essentially just adopting a form of central planning that has failed in every country it has been tried.

Always question people who can't support an argument without anything but feigned moral superiority. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I'm sure this comforts people that are making minimum wage. I mean, knowing that their jobs are essential to keeping the country running, but not essential enough to make a passable living...that's got to inspire some sort of pride!

You can't actually argue in favor of central planning vs our system where we have the highest wages in the world and very few people actually work for minimum wage.

I think it's hilarious.

The workforce just had about what...12 million people jump on unemployment (on top of people not being tracked and are unemployed) and we still have people saying we can't afford to pay the remaining workers more. Less employees to pay should mean those left standing can reasonably be given raises, but yet...

lmfao

I dunno, I'm starting to lean more toward UBI than pushing for the whole living wage thing, for a few reasons mostly:

1. American government is too crooked and in bed with corporations, so the people who wish to keep wages as low as possible have the means to do so. However, if they did push for a higher minimum wage, it would be so:

2. Big companies like Amazon and Walmart can eat the cost of paying higher wages in order to put the final nail in the coffin of small businesses everywhere, so they'd see a net gain in their profits either way

Or,
3. Companies are fucking evil and gross and they'll maintain their profits by any means necessary, including cutting benefits, hours, and staff

We also have a very high cost of living to offset those wages.

That being said, how best do you think we should fight poverty? Clearly these jobs need to be done.

  1. No, they're not. In some places, yes there will be a slight bump in pay, but they make it clear that it's temporary for the duration of the crisis. It's not permanent. And again, it's not across the board.
  2. Grocery stores however probably did indeed cut corporate staff either altogether or down to a skeleton crew in headquarters and office workers not needed for the actual ground level store operations.

We actually don't. Especially with our progressive taxation system and no VAT tax. If you adjust for cost of living... we still have the highest wages in the world.

There are numerous ways to alleviate poverty without adopting bad policies that only makes things worse. The EITC for example is one of the most effective welfare programs we have and should be expanded. We know what works and what doesn't, we just have a tendency to support things that sound nice instead.

If you're living paycheck to paycheck, some minimum wage people shouldnt be focused on getting the newest iphones or sneakers or eating out all the time or finding the having apartments above their range.

It's silly and all its doing is placing a band-aid on an open wound. All it will do is propel us into automation and take away even more jobs for people in need. The issue is spoon feeding people the idea of college when trades should be just as spoon feed.

If anything minimum wage needs to be abolished and trade schools need to be actively promoted.
