Awesome, our entire postal system will be privatized and naturally only a few places like Amazon will be capable of taking it's place and as such they will market up their prices to cover the costs and gain a monopoly over it because whose gonna stop them? Whose gonna compete with them? I wonder how long until we privatize the police, firemen and any other thing available to the public like parks and libraries. We're already losing public education and with Devos around it's only gonna get worse. America might become the first country to have everything be owned by private organizations or one mega corporation someday.

America is already rapidly speeding towards being a Plutocracy, if it's not one already

Ask yourself, how often do you mail stuff that *couldn't* be sent through email or fax.

Also, before answering, understand that there are free apps on smart phones that can scan documents now. (sorry if this sounds condesending, but I legit only just found out about these through my job 3 years ago and meet people who have no idea all the time)
well ballots for one...

beyond that, its still the primary way official correspondence is done. phone calls/emails are too easy to hack or spoof, and that's unlikely to change; but its generally much more of a hassle for a scammer to steal your mail.

it also acts as a check against private mail services allowing their charges to spiral out of control.

Is there any reason for republicans to still be in power? Every single decision and idea they have is bad. It's like they're cartoon villains. There is zero grey area with them.
appeal to majority demographic tribalism to put it bluntly.

Honestly, I can't see the USPS being that necessary anymore. Sure there are a couple things, but they can easily be taken over by something else

Are there actual numbers on it? We might be paying more over all to keep USPS afloat. Someone smarts had to do it already

You're not.

Without USPS there's nothing stopping UPS/FedEx/etc from charging extortionate fees to ship to lower-population areas or just refusing to ship to places period.

FedEx already does this with their Delivery Area Surcharge.

I wouldnt count on that. My two cousins work for the post office and a few years ago had to move to another state because they shut down a major processing facility in my area. The shut down meant everyones mail was going to take an extra 2 or 3 days to get there and the mayor even signed legislation begging them to stay. But the federal government was like, nope. We out. The Post Office has been quietly winding down for years.

This, the post office is like already out of money, it's only a matter of time.

I'm not opposed to the USPS being phased out but there's a lot to be done before that. For some bizarre reason though, the same people who want to kill the USPS frequently hamper the necessary progress to pick up the slack once it's gone.

Horseshit. Plenty of people don't check their email, or ignore things that shouldn't be ignored. Snail mail is the last good way to get ahold of people if all else fails.

Everyone says the USPS keeps FedEx/UPS prices in check

But I mean, wouldn't they have to keep their prices in check to stay competitive with each other? Or are they all owned under a single conglomerate I'm not aware of?
