...that it has any efficacy at all in treating COVID-19.

Based on the clinical trial results we're running currently at my hospital, the only difference we've found is that the experimental (HCQ) group has a very slightly shorter ICU stay. That's the only statistically significant difference. No mortality difference.

Trump has stock in a company that makes the drug. That should tell you just about everything you need to know.

Also he looked directly at a solar eclipse.

The side effects are so bad I wouldn't take it unless I had malaria.

It's an effective treatment for Lupus as well. They are bad though, my mom has run through a bunch of rheumatologists and everyone one warns her of the side effects every time they see that she is on it.

There are two major ones -

1) It significantly prolongs the QT interval on your EKG. Which significantly increases your risk for cardiac rhythm abnormalities including arrest.

2) It inhibits cytochromes in your liver that help break down other medications. Causing normal doses of medications to become toxic.

Yes.

Macrolides (azithromycin being one) has some anti-inflammatory properties in the lung parenchyma, but the effect is pretty minimal. Of course, as an antibiotic it is totally ineffective against a virus.

Ivermectin sounds idiotic to me, but I haven't read about its efficacy so I won't opine.

Remdesivir is an antiviral, so up front there's some possibility.

So are there any studies about the dangers of this drug and how many patients that get administered it end up with these side effects vs how many benefit?

It's been around since the 1930's, so there's gotta be a plethora of information as to why it shouldn't be used in this instance.

Yes, it's a very well-studied medication. That's why doctors are almost universally speaking out against the president's assertions that it's a safe drug anyone should take.

I took it for a time to deal with my Rheumatoid Arthritis before the Methotrexate started to work. It worked wonders on me and brought me back from the brink of crippling, debilitating pain. No side effects either. That being said, I have never had a problem with any medicine in my life and everything works just as intended on me with no side effects. I guess I'm just super lucky like that. Although, it is unlucky that I need those medicines in the first place.
