Wisconsin. Our governor tried to postpone it til June. Republicans want death so they're forcing it today.

My 70 yr old mom is planning to go vote. We are trying to convince her not to. Any advice?

repulbicans taking voter suppression to the next level, voter culling...

go with your mom. get her to wear gloves and a face mask (not because they are good protection, but because they make you less likely to unconciously touch your face), and make sure to keep people out of your little 'social distancing' space. oh, and bring hand sanitizer, those voting machines would be a hotbed.

This is such a dumb topic. Unless you truly believe that "Republicans" are evil, what political benefit would there be for Republicans to let the vote continue today?

Also other states have delayed their primaries, this has nothing to do with "the Republicans" and has everything to do with Wisconsin in particular. I mean I agree this is a bad decision, but there is no conspiracy.

Also an argument for not delaying primaries is that it could be used as justification for delaying the election in November, and therefore the inauguration in January. I don't think you want that, do you TC?

The election can't get delayed. If they're forced to not hold it then Trump and Pence terms are up and since an election wasn't held the SotH becomes president.

It has been exclusively republicans fighting against efforts to postpone the vote

first, Democratic governor Evers tried to move the election to all-mail. shot down by republicans.

then, he tried to extend the window by which people could return mail in ballots, as the state has been unable to process the high demand for them. Many people havent even received their requested absentee ballots as of today, Election Day. This was contested by republicans and shot down by the courts along party lines

then, he tried to eliminate a requirement wisconsin has to require a second witness to sign absentee ballots, for people living alone social distancing. This was reversed by republicans

then, he tried to call a special legislative meeting to discuss postponing the election. No republicans showed up so the session did not happen

then, he signed an executive order postponing the election and called a session to discuss its instead republicans contested it to the courts, where the courts struck the order down, again alone party lines

So in summary, yes, this is 100% on republicans. These are all indisputable, verifiable FACTS. If those facts bother you, then maybe you should reconsider your stance here

Well, this isn't true because the DNC has threatened to remove delegates for states that postponed their primaries. The DNC hasn't spoken about that recently but it's still a possibility (probably won't happen though at this point). Biden hasn't said anything about the primaries but he recently said that we can't delay the November election, and the virus may still be a major issue in November.

Also 14 states + Puerto Rico have delayed their primaries

Alaska
Connecticut
Delaware
Georgia
Hawaii
Indiana
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maryland
New York
Ohio
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
West Virginia
Wyoming
Puerto Rico

so this has nothing to do with "the Republicans" and has everything to do with Wisconsin and the particular members of their Supreme Court.

Because there's a state Supreme Court election taking place and it is their belief that because the virus is more prevalent in densely-populated urban areas that largely vote Democratic, the resulting drop in turnout will resound to the benefit of the conservative candidate.

It's a very clear, concrete political benefit, which they view as more important than the health and safety of voters and poll workers.

I didn't realize there was a state Supreme Court election happening as well. I mean, it's a fair accusation because no other state has a Supreme Court election this early (besides Arkansas which was on March 3). I also have no idea what the political leanings of the Wisconsin Supreme Court are. Do you? It's also totally possible that the Wisconsin Supreme Court decided that democracy was too important to delay, because doing so would set a terrible precedent.

In any case, this still reeks of "the Republicans are evil!!" sports team politics when 14 other states, half of them red states, have successfully delayed their elections.

Also it's impossible to say what the turnout for this election will be. In all likelihood people will still go to vote but they'll just be at risk of catching the coronavirus. Do you really think "the Republicans" sat at a desk, evilly scheming that the liberal voters will have to put their lives at risk if they want their vote to count? It's on par with the "Democratic hoax" stuff that Donald Trump said about the coronavirus.

Wisconsin republicans, exclusively along party lines, in the state legislative and judicial branch, are the ones that have been pushing to not only have this election but fighting against any modifications to it to make it easier for people to vote absentee

I think Republicans are smart enough to know that an increase in coronavirus transmissions is an inevitable result of holding an election in person at this time. We have reason to believe that was the case in Michigan, which held its primary, as compared to Ohio, which postponed its primary.

First off, it doesnt matter what their motive is. The end result and facts here are that republicans, as a unified group, pushed to hold the election today, and not make any concessions making it easier for the people to vote

but secondly, voter suppression is a well-documented tactic that Republicans use because it disproportionally affects the poor and people in urban areas, voting blocs that heavily lean democratic

Could they not have sent in a vote some time ago?

From March 28
https://bit.ly/2V7MQna
Evers announced Friday that he would not issue an emergency order to require everyone be sent an absentee ballot, saying the Legislature is the best place to make that happen. Earlier in the week he issued a safer at home order, banning nonessential travel, until April 24, but didnt address the April 7 election.

The governor could issue an order today and it would result in a lawsuit tomorrow, Evers chief legal counsel Ryan Nilsestuen said. As of Friday, five lawsuits had been filed regarding the upcoming election.

However, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, said the idea of mailing and processing millions of ballots in 10 days was not feasible or realistic.

In pitching this idea, the governor is lying directly to Wisconsinites about this even being remotely possible, Fitzgerald said in a statement. Acting like this is doable is a hoax.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, also slammed Evers proposal, calling the suggestion careless and reckless in a statement.

Wisconsin Elections Commission administrator Meagan Wolfe told the commission Friday it likely would be a considerable challenge to print an absentee ballot for each of the more than 3.3 million registered voters by the April 7 election.

There are several possible factors listed in that article. The primary in Michigan is mentioned once in the article basically as a side-thought. I think difference in testing is a much more likely reason for the difference in infections.

I mean, it's simply absurd to think that the other side politically is literally evil. I am convinced that the party mindset (or more specifically the mindset of the Wisconsin Supreme Court justices) was not "Democratic voters are more likely to be in urban areas, so they will be less likely to go out and vote, so we must continue the elections for that reason." My evidence for that is that there's an even split among red and blue states that actually did postpone their primaries.
