I'm guessing the future games will either;
Go in a completely different 'time travel wibbly wobbly' direction ala XIII-2 and they use it as a way to be a 'greatest hits of FFVII' to get players to jump around big moments and locations within the series and but the overall structure is completely different. Probably will be a whole new canon for the universe.

or

The plot/structure is still overall samey but there's hints that they can change their fate and to save certain characters or whatever. They'll either use this to subvert expectations or to give hope that things can be changed when they can't.

Frankly, part of me wouldn't be surprised if they just used the premise to add an random extra boss to wherever they cut off their episodes and essentially ignore it the rest of the time.

Unless I'm not understanding that bit at all, which may be the case.

Well, I believe the more likely theory is that this is a Zack from a different reality which did survive. What role he will play is a bit of a mystery, but I do like the idea of an alternate storyline with Zack alive being explored. Admittedly, I thought I would only be ever to see that in fan fiction lol.

It has been done before. But it's not really a remake. It's more used as a reason to reboot and start a new canon generally. Which is why I'd feel a bit uneasy expecting an overall faithful story.

It makes the whole 'we have no idea how many parts this will be' comment make a lot more sense.

The bigger picture there is SE having the gall to split this remake up and sell it to you piecewise. If these changes result in no major alterations to the plot, what was the point of adding them at all?

I agree that splitting it into parts was incredibly stupid. I'm with you there. I'm not saying it won't lead to any major alterations.

Like I said on the Remake board, when it comes to Sephiroth, I personally think "that" particular scene isn't him time traveling. It's him attempting to manipulate Cloud into doing what he wants because we know he's manipulative. Telling Cloud he needs his help because "something" is coming. What do we know that's out there? Meteor. Why does he need Cloud's help? To get the Black Materia as he waits in the Northern Crater so he can summon Meteor? That could simply be expanding more on just how manipulative he can be.

That's just an example.

I saw one of the leaks say that there are future flashes of Aerith dying and Red XIII running in a recovering planet which says to me that they don't really have any intention of keeping things traditional in the future. They're assuming you're familiar with the original because otherwise they're just spoiling it for no reason.

Maybe that's wrong though.

I actually feel like it's more symbolism. Kinda saying that Zack is there with Cloud, especially given his speech to him in CC.

The worst part of all this is that it is really only the ending that introduced all this stuff.

So if you want to see how it plays out, wait for god knows how long it takes SE to make a sequel.
