I know most tend to go 3-4, but how far do you think it could go? Or why is 3-4 used aside from tradition/technology limitations?

probably cause it would extend the time for each turn in so many ways, (more commands, more enemies on the other side to make the game challenging in any form etc) and thus extend the time of every random battle and thus making grinding even more annoying than it is.

Disgaea's not a jRPG, it's an SRPG.

What's a jrpg in your eyes? Just one that's turn based?

Also to somewhat answer the question, the norm is 3-4 because of balance reasons and perhaps time reasons? (as in if you have too many characters in battle at a time then battles might start to drag on)

3 is too few assuming you're controlling all of them.

FF IV had up to 5. FF X had 3 but you could swap characters whenever you wanted. 5 seems like a good cutoff point to me, any more would start to feel cluttered imo.

@Stagmar 6. I think it was four in Suikoden IV though.

Suikoden was the oddball of the series...but now that I think about it, Suikoden III was the oddball, Suikoden IV was just..not as good as the rest of the series.

If that were the case why would I argue against Disgaea, a turn-based strategy RPG, of being a jRPG?

Standard turn-based (like Final Fantasy) = 3-6, with 4 being the optimal
Turn-based strategy (like Fire Emblem) = 6-15, with 10 being the optimal

As far as "what would work" I think it's more about what's fun to play than any theoretical limit. And that will depend a lot on other factors such as complexity, how many distinct roles are there, how many distinct units to fill those roles, etc. I'd rather ask questions like, "at which point do decisions stop feeling meaningful?", and there's no one size fits all number for that.

I liked how in FFIV, you had a max of five members but throughout a lot of the game you didn't have a full squad.

I wish FFVII and VIII had four.

5 is probably the best, though anything between 4-6 is good. With 3 and less you pretty much have to let every character do most everything, while with more you can make them feel different.

Hm, can you elaborate a bit on that last point?
Party size should be something that enables meaningful and interesting decisions. "Should I put in these two characters? I'll have more damage but less protection", for example. If your party is too big, you might run the risk of never having to make interesting choices and it might feel boring or meaningless. It's not the only aspect, but it's part of what goes into the design
