I do. People die from any disease really, if they were going to die, they were going to die. It's not like healthy adults are just dropping by the numbers and the media is only contributing to the panic for viewership. I was practicing social distancing back then and weary about who was around me using logic that it was Chinese new year time and knew that people would be flying in and out of the country. Or could have had family they would be interacting with who was doing so.

The thing that separates covid from the flu is it is highly infectious. That is what makes it so dangerous. Otherwise it is like the flu. How often do you ever get the flu? Me, rarely. But now tell me I have a high chance of getting the flu. That is covid. The average person should not be too worried.

Me, I am in day 7 of symptoms, I feel almost back to normal. My wife is an ICU nurse only taking care of covid patients for the last 3 weeks, she most likely gave it to me, she has not had symptoms, most of her coworkers have already been tested positive, the rest most likely have been infected with no symptoms. None of her coworkers have died and they are back to the battlefield. She seems to not be worried at all and her doctor friends are not too worried but yes, they are overwhelmed only because they don't have the space to house all the elderly, immune compromised, and obese patients that will most likely succumb to covid. According to her it is just a large scale flu. The usual suspects who are at risk are still the usual suspects. That hasn't changed. Outliers will always be present but at a larger scale because a larger amount are being infected. I'll trust my wife over the media any day of the week.

Yeah it was ridiculous and on top of that for some reason instead of being logical about it, everyone turned it into some race bs which it never was about. Heck you still run the risk of getting modded here over it for mentioning COVID19 and china/wuhan in the same sentence. ppl were more worried about dealing with that shit than the real problem at hand.

politicians were bombarded with accusations of racism when flight bans to and from china were made. Which is another logical move to make since it originated there, then now pretty much all flights are cancelled around the world

I don't know if they are over hyping it but some of the emotive stuff hasn't been helpful and just scares people. All the war metaphors irritated me as well but the politicians seem have adopted these now too

To an extent yes, meaning, any suggestion they put out there which encourages a prolonged suspension of daily life past whats realistically necessary. The media loves fear and selling it is their job. However the virus itself is not a joke, for many reasons.

There's a person who posts comments on all the local news here using a facebook account that his and his wife's name on it. Suffice to say, he thinks it's all paranoia created by the Democrats and anyone listening to this is dumb and deserves to be shot. Every now and then he mixes in a comment about God within his ramblings.

The other day, one of the big factories in town said they would close down for a couple of days to clean as they believe a supplier who had tested positive for COVID19 met with office personnel and it could have spread. The person with the husband and wife facebook account posted on how this is dangerous as she (so I'm guessing the wife was now posting this) is immunocompromised and her husband works at said factory. She's scared he could bring it home and she'd be infected so the factory needed to stay shut.

I saw earlier this afternoon that the husband / wife facebook account was at their usual response when a local restaurant said they were shutting down until things blew over, how it's dumb they would, this isn't a big deal. I would think the account was created just to troll, but their personal information is all over it including family pictures and it was made several years back.

The stress this virus is putting on the medical system in this country is far worse than any average American could ever fathom. This shit about it being overblown or that people always die so this isn't a big deal just haven't educated themselves on what is actually happening. They take a dump and present that dump as an informed thought. By the time this is all done, there will be dozens of thousands America deaths that were preventable if it weren't for the stress on our health system, and thats with these measures being taken. Imagine how many more preventable deaths there would be if we loosened just a little let alone completely disregard the virus all together.

I have problems with underscoring the China element of this, the continued off-comparison of per capita numbers, & barely reporting on any vaccination or antibody treatment progress.

It's mostly the TV media that has been the worst of it. Print Media has actually been good. Digital media has been so-so. For all the rightful shit FOX is getting, HuffPo and Vox were just as dismissive of this in the early phases.

No one has the full story, no one knows the truth. Is the government statistics under-reported or is it inflated? Who the hell knows. But forcing people to stay in their homes is not the answer. Some people can't even get tested if they have the corona-virus. Imagine having a family member who has the corona-virus and doesn't know it, is in fact spreading the virus to their parents and siblings inside their own house.

Science, statistics and common sense say it's definitely effective.

If you do a full lockdown like China did, you'll exterminate the illness in a month.

If you force people to stay at home and wear masks / do social distancing / do epidemic hygiene when they absolutely have to leave, the illness spread will be greatly slowed down, meaning hospitals will be able to treat people who need the emergency rooms.

If you do nothing, the vast majority of the country gets infected, become unable to work and almost everyone who needs to get hospitalized (not just covid victims, everyone) to survive will die.

Notice how regardless of whether you do lockdowns or not, people are unable to go to work? Except without lockdowns people become ill and die?

H1N1 Killed roughly 400k in 7 months (well, between 100k to 700k) in 2009. No panic. No news media over coverage. Nothing. People went on with their daily lives. I don't even remember it. Like, maybe read ONE story about it.

Don't know which is worse. h1n1 and just letting it do its job, or going full panic mode and shutting down the majority of economy to save some lives.
