Probably because in the past people thought you were insane if you thought this could ever be bigger than 9/11

and maybe TC is wondering if those thoughts have changed recently

Nah. Even if covid19 surpasses 3k deaths in the us 911 still was worse. Many people who survived it but were in the area breathed in toxic dusts and have gotten lung cancer or other diseases that killed them.

Covids def worse. As tragic as 9/11 was, this virus is something that'll stick around for a while. Even with potential vaccines the virus can always mutate.

Interesting. I made this topic a few weeks ago and the results started out close, but ended up going heavily that 9/11 was a bigger deal, and a few people even said it was a stupid question.

Things changed a lot in a few weeks. I think coronavirus will be a bigger deal than 9/11 if the quarantine stuff lasts into the summer and beyond. Otherwise 9/11 will be symbolically a bigger deal.

By this time next week we will surpass the death total from 9/11. We probably won't even need a full week to do that. We also have the most trust worthy person in Anthony Fauci saying to prepare for the loss of 100k-200k lives. This is the most significant thing to happen in our lifetime. 9/11 was one big shock, but it's not going to compare to COVID-19.

Beyond the death toll and lung problems we're dealing with right now, COVID-19 is having an enormous worldwide economic impact that 9/11 never came close to approaching.

Not to mention, shaking the economy, creating struggle worldwide and showing just how crippling Americans are willing to be to each other. We always knew, but seeing it in a time like this is still hard to take.

I think 911 is worse because it was intended, it was mass murder.

This virus is mother natures doing.

Like, how many people died in those tsunamis, both the Indonesian and the Japanese one. You don't see people talk about them as much.

I would say not yet, but only because 9/11 spawned nearly 20 years of warfare that has ruined a region for generations, and that's not even including how things like the Patriot act fundamentally altered concepts like privacy and due process.

If in a year society has more or less gone back to the way things were, then I would say 9/11 still was the bigger deal.

I'll ask the same question that I asked last week to this question.

If you think COVID-19 is bigger than 9/11, what do you think will change because of it?

9/11 had a lot of implications beyond just "when it happened". There were lots of repercussions for how our society (and other countries around the world) were set up because of it.

Body count isn't a sufficient measurement. Economic damage isn't a sufficient measurement.

That's just my opinion though. I just think if you measure it by deaths, for example, most natural disasters will beat 9/11. Hurricane Maria caused more deaths than 9/11 (in the short term at the very least), but the long term impacts of that on our society is low.

9/11. When that happened everyone was shaken and on their toes because no one knew when the next attack could or would happen. Imagine if the virus and 9/11 happened at the same time, people would be more afraid of the attack than the virus.

Maybe I'm biased, but I was a New Yorker whose mother was working near the towers when they went down.

I'd say corona might be a bigger global issue (obviously) but it's really easy to forget how much 9/11 changed things in America.

One is more dramatic because a lot of people got to see two planes (live or after) crash into two buildings of great economic significance to the United States. It also plunged America into war.

it is not, however, more important than the COVID-19 which has a greater overall impact on the global scale, and we probably haven't gotten to the peak. The impact of COVID-19 is going to become more clear in the coming months. Its ramifications on society and the economy could be enormous.

Funny when the topic was made last week, people were bringing up the aftermath and the impact 9/11 made after 2001. Today people are doing the opposite.

If you consider that 9/11 lead to our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which killed how many thousands of innocent civilians, cost us trillions, dramatically shaped the way we look at the world etc. I think a lot of people in this topic are grossly downplaying the fallout of 9/11.

either way, these are both world altering events.

On the flipside, you could argue that the aftermath of 9/11 (Patriot Act, etc.) has been pretty damaging to the state of the world.

But in terms of deaths directly caused, COVID-19 is obviously going to be worse, yeah.
