I know a desktop is better, but space is a bit of an issue.

I'm not trying to play games on max settings. I just want one that'll run games well on Steam

I bought a powerspec last year with a RTX2070 that runs everything I need for around 1400. Powerspec is the in house brand for Microcenter if you have one near you.

Look into Eluktronics

I got one last year, and it's awesome. Not as flashy as Alienware or something similar, but just as much power.

I'm looking in the $1600 range

I think with my stimulus check+ bonus from work I may buy one.

I'm going back and forth with it and a PC tho because I could probably clear off enough room in the back of my apartment to fit a PC.

What would $1600 in the PC market get me?

You might have to jump through hoops, but you can get a 2060 laptop with the right deals for about $1k.

That's more powerful than every console so far.

Shit, even cheaper if you don't mind a 1660, which is still pretty damn good.

I don't now much about PC specs because I'm a console gamer, what games would that run well and what games would that struggle to run?

They release so many graphics cards it's kind of confusing

Define "good"

The main games I play on my laptop are Sea of Thieves, Halo MCC, and CoD Warzone. All at 1080p/60fps high settings. I paid about $700 for it a year ago.

look for laptops with an RTX 2060, that will be able to play almost anything on the market with high settings in 1080p. you can prob expect to spend 1300 - 1600.

honestly i would get a name-brand laptop so you have a good warranty and build quality, check out the Dell G series

you cant afford an RTX2070 or 2080 on your budget so just focus on the 2060.

make sure you have 16GB ddr4 RAM, and a SSD is absolutely essential - do NOT buy a laptop with an HDD or one of those hybrid drives. it's a big deal imo

So I thought you had to have the best possible graphics card?

The 2060 is outdated right?

I'm worried about getting something and then it being unable to run games in like a year.

i would get a solid 1000 dollar pc with lots of ram and a fast processor and thunderbolt 3

then buy a external gpu enclosure: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=egpu&i=electronics
and a compatible rtx 2070/2060

"but i wanted to play games on the go"
buy a switch.

well yes and no

the 20-- series are the current series. they are seperated by their price point. 2080 is super expensive, 2070 is up there, 2060 is around 300ish, and usually theres a 50 model too for like 200 ish but there isn't one this time

BUT

nvidia is stupid and decided to add "SUPER" to them. so now theres the 2060 SUPER and 2070 SUPER, where the 2060 SUPER is as fast as the old 2070 and the new 2070 SUPER is about as good as the 2080, but their price point division is the same

THEN THERES THE TI MODELS AND UGGGGHH

look just get a 2060 super or 2070 super, which ever you can afford and dont think about getting the "new" one cuz its dumb. its all dumb.

My biggest worry is that a new gen is coming up and I'm worried if I drop a lot of money I'm going to not be able to play new games in a year or 2.

I'm still probably going to get a PS5 even if I get a gaming PC. I'm using my gaming PC for "western" games

i wouldn't worry about that. my old gtx 1060 came out in 2016 and most games even today list that as their "Recommended" spec.

example: here's doom eternals recommended spec:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-6700K or better, or AMD Ryzen 7 1800X or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB), NVIDIA GeForce 970 (4GB), AMD RX 480 (8GB)
all stuff that came out like 4-5 years ago.

thats fine. i dont think everyone has to build their own pc

just dont buy a BAD prebuilt. like those walmart "OVERPOWERED" PC.
here's why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCdnHo0M95w

i would suggest watching these videos if you want to find a good, reputable seller of prebuilt pcs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzpYkpZX8qw

its a really interesting look into how these dealers treat you and what their customer service is like if you run into issues

spoilers: buy them from here: https://www.originpc.com/gaming/desktops/

Yeah the hardware side is a bit intimidating.

I'm thinking for a desktop my max bottom line for the PC itself is gonna be around $1500

Then I'm gonna probably get a decent 4k monitor. I don't need something insane,

What's wrong with an Alienware?

These things look pretty beastly, and they're expensive, but it looks like getting an Alienware for $2000 would be a beat of a machine.

Wait a few months for the 3000 GPU line so you'll keep up with next gen for longer for a better price.
