The only extra things a game should have are unlockable characters/modes/stages/etc

But once it has stuff like "Press 'A' 10 Million Times!" and other shit that's nothing but a blatant attempt to pad out the game, forget it >_>

I never understood rage over achievements.

Like I've actually known people that got made about games having achievements that are too hard / only possible for a few people to get.

Just fucking play the game the way you want, fool. Getting every achievement doesn't mean you actually did everything the game has to offer. Relax

If done right, they can be a good way to encourage players to attempt challenges or a certain playstyle that they wouldn't have tried otherwise. There are a lot that just require busywork though, and that's lame.

This is how I view it. I actually enjoy going for all the achievements in a game I really like, but I won't bother for them if the game is just okay or if I find it boring/tedious or whatever. It always sucks when there's online only achievements and the online community has been dead for a while, lol.

They're like a double-edged sword though. In a way they kind of ruined casual gaming for me because I find that I'm usually aware of them/interested in them in the background and maybe too focused on doing challenges instead of just enjoying the game. I usually try to do one full playthrough without even looking at them, then go back and get whatever ones I missed if I liked the game enough.

But in games where they are completely absent, (IE: Switch games or whatever) I'm disappointed there aren't any and I don't feel the need to play the game to its full potential. Even when I got the SNES Classic, the lack of achievements kind of made it boring for me even though it had a lot of games I loved as a child. It's a me problem, but I wish I could go back to a time before achievements/trophies and just play and enjoy every game for what it was.

I think achievements are great, by and large.

They can point you to new-to-you parts of the game.

The "worst" ones are ones that are mentioned. "press X a million times", "beat ur 1st enemy/1st boss", and "do thing in online that's now impossible because it's dead".

But those're only "worst" in the sense that they are of 0 worth, but not negatively bad.

Just ignore those ones.

the only achievements that need to die in a fire are multiplayer ones.

though the halo 3 ones on the 360 made for some fun moments. People still talked on the random mics, so you got a bunch "LET ME KILL YOU WITH SPARTAN LASER" or whatever because those achievements were really crazy and specific. Like get hammer kills on one particular map under on particular playlist. Or for that hammer kill one, the game was capture the base or whatever it's called, the one where you need to be in the base for so long. Literally all of us in a random free for all were ignoring the objective and gunning for the one hammer and hammer killing lol. Then one troll while we were all doing that, decided to play the objective. the rest of us ganged up on him so hard lol. He did eventually sneak up on us and get the objective though. You just don't get that kind of random teamwork in games anymore with randoms.

I managed to get all but like 3. Serious crazy co-op grinding fun fun times.

I used to ignore them until a friend pointed out that I should try. Now I hate many of the trophies I have gotten but I am a better gamer for having done it. I totally understand the need to rage.

One of the previous Soulcalibur games had an achievement for pressing Start at the title screen which always amused me. I wonder if that was so you couldn't decide you didn't care for it all that much and delete it from your history so people would crack on and keep playing until they had a decent score.

No one's forcing you to tap A 10 million times.

That is some weird ass logic.

Worth getting rid of imo

I knew a dude who was obsessed with achievements, so he talked about them all the time, but he would always call them Cheevos or Cheevers. I stopped talking to him.

Apparently Epic Games not having them is one of the reasons why people hate EGS so god damn much. Weird.

Yeah, I don't get Steam trading cards either.

I've made like four dollars selling them over the years so fine.
