Yes, it is a good game. Unfortunately, I think Silent Hill 4's reputation is pretty cemented even if there are many, many stalwart fans that desperately try to keep the game out of the proverbial garbage. There's just too many that are turned off by how different it is from the first three.

Here is the thing. At first it's like hey this is pretty good. Interesting setting, story is going places, combat kind of sucks, especially compared to 3, but it's fine. Then the game just starts becoming an awful chore. You can't even get scared about the hauntings or whatever because you literally save where they happen. It's just a bunch of trial and error with candles. The "bosses" are all terrible and most people don't know the candle trick for your follower so you are constantly abandoning her to avoid her getting hurt. It's just really frustrating to play. 3 has the best gameplay and 2 ended up with the best story. 4 is the only one I regret replaying. The second time wasn't fun at all.
And for the record I beat all of them on hard from a fresh file, so it wasn't that it was boring or lacking tension from the difficulty. 2 is my personal favorite but 1 scared the hell out of me when I was a kid and 3 / 4 are just has good.

I didn't mind the backtracking, but I hated the ghosts and the escort stuff.
