We booked in December for a trip in May, and then bought trip insurance back in January before coronavirus went international, but last I read, travel insurance policies aren't doing anything regarding the epidemic.
They generally reimburse you for your ticketfare only if you get sick/unemployed/have a crime committed against you. Now at this point, I don't think we logistically can go without getting quarantined both going out and then coming back in.

Meanwhile, the airline itself is only offering rebooking fees waived through August 31st, and we don't really want to go in the summertime since that's when I'm busiest at work.

Anyone else have experience with this kinda bullshit right now?

I have tickets to go to Mexico next month, but it sounds like it won't be happening with the way things are going.

You can just throw them away instead of eating them. I don't think thermal card stock is healthy to ingest.

Read the fine print and make it work

Can you charge back an airline on this? That'd be exciting

The most I can think up is that my wife got furloughed last week due to her company slowing down. I wanna see if we can make that count as employment termination.

That's basically being laid off. It's a synonym to furloughed.

So yay!

You can try and chargeback with your credit card company. Just dont openly lie about anything. Since the airline didnt technically provide you a service yet, a reputable credit card companies may side with you, especially given the circumstances. I've heard other people explain the situation to their CC company and it worked for them and there was no pandemic.
