...in that it's an arbitrary permanent change to a longtime character, while still keeping everything the same at the end of the episode

Basically, Fat Tony dies of a heart attack, his cousin Fit Tony (played by Joe Mantegna, the same VA) takes over the business, and he gets out of shape, and is eventually called Fat Tony, looking exactly the same.

It wasn't...terrible. It had some funny moments, just with the addition of that one dumb character development. There's been much cringier stuff during my Simpsons binge.

Isnt principle and the pauper what the community considers the death of the series?

Just think. Now you're all set to hunt and kill to your heart's content.

You know what's "funnier" is that episode with fat tony's son who likes lisa but forced to go into the family business he doesn't want. The end is like the godfather. I smirked imo, anyone have that scene?

it's basically like that one episode where it turns out that Principal Skinner took the real Seymour Skinner's identity, and then after that episode, it's basically not a thing anymore

He relapsed sometime around seasons 17-19 or so. Not really a formal episode about it, he just started popping up at Moe's and plastered again.

Season 22.

And I agree PatP is actually a really funny episode, but people always fixate on the premise of the episode as being damaging. But it's mostly fine, and there were worse episodes than that, even back then.

At least the Simpsons is pretty self-aware about it. Even the Principal and Pauper had that part at the end where the judge says no one's ever allowed to talk about it again, lol

PatP isnt necessarily a bad episode, its just you can use that episode as the beginning of the decline of consistent quality.

Did you see the new episode this season with the Sea Captain opener?

As with Skinner and Fat Tony, its just forgotten or never mentioned again. Cartoons shouldnt have continuity be taken too seriously

The show itself has always had an intentionally continuity. Springfield has an east AND west coast and west Springfield is bigger than Texas. And a couple of years after that flashback episode where Homer had a grunge band in the 90s, they did another flashback that was back in the 70s.
