I think I know why it looks like that in Japan. each of the main buttons is a different color to help small kids who can't read yet tell the buttons apart. then they just made them all purple in North America. seems like a downgrade

It is a downgrade. Most of the stuff America gets is a downgrade. Look at the American SNES.

I bet the reason was something dumb like "we have to make it look less childish"

NA localizations always assumed the worst for some reason. NA gamers were terrible at video games, and would also just rent every game and never buy them, but also would be legitimately unable to tell that their voice actors didn't actually speak English at all.

So I dunno, maybe this was because they were afraid our feeble NA retinas would get blown out by four different colors.

I thought it was great with the concave buttons. They should have kept the colors though at least. Overall the NA version is superior in design. The physical aesthetic is better.

It was a marketing gimmick by Nintendo. They wanted to get away from the idea that video game consoles were toys, and more like home entertainment systems. Instead of curves and accents, they went blocky and grey to make it look like a VCR.

The actual reason for the SNES's design was apparently because the Japanese hardware designers for it thought Americans just put cans of pop on everything, so they made it flat and rectangular so their customers could set pop cans on it.
