One issue I have with Tropical Freeze which makes it win over DKCR imo by a slight margin instead of a large margin is not enough minecart stages. Sawmill Thrill is my favorite level from either game hands down but there were only 2 other cart levels. DKCR had a bunch more and one of them in particular was almost as good as Sawmill Thrill (I want to say it was Rickety Rails... it was the one with the minecart music remix that was written in much different and more intense tempo than the others). Tropical Freeze definitely had better bosses too and they all had incredible theme tracks that were perfect for them (except for maybe the Polar Bear, who still had a great track, but I don't really see how the Bon Jovi sound translated to his character >_>. The whole 5th world seemed like David Wise didn't really know how to approach it from a composition standpoint and just kind of improvised, whereas with the other worlds, you can really feel the atmosphere in the music). DKCR was kinda hit or miss musically for me. A lot of the remixes were very good, but most of the original tracks stumbled imo. The only original one that stood out to me was the beach/ship/barrel stage in the Ruins world. Can't remember the level name. Shipwreck Shore possibly? Oh, and the gold temple levels.
