Specifically after 9/11, it feels like there was a certain attitude and culture that pervaded the mainstream in just about all areas of entertainment: film, music, tv, etc.

Anybody else get that feeling?

This. Smash Mouth immediately comes to my mind. And teen/high school movies.

No, if anything, it was 2 time periods. 2001 - 2004 might be called the Terrorist Era, and 2005 - 2008 might be called the Cool Era (for lack of better designations). Those time periods felt quite different for me. Then, of course, there was the Recession Era, which was about 2008 - 2016, which made me FAR more unhappy (and angry) than the Terrorist Era ever did.

Kinda? Wasn't nu-metal pretty popular at the time for a while?

I basically only listened to rap and hip hop in that decade and there is definitely a distinct attitude there.

Definitely. I wish I could put it into words, but there was a dramatic shift after 9/11.

Just to be clear, I was talking about culture in a very broad sense, and not just entertainment media (but that too, of course).

It was! Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Korn were all popular. I wouldn't say they were the most mainstream (I think crunk rap was the big popular music trend at the time), but they were up there.

You know whats funny. No one talks about how 9/11 changed rap. I think thats when the hardcore kill-each-other east-vs-west rap kind of died and the more hip hoppy r&b rap took over.
I thought that died with Tupac in the 90s (just based on music history videos I've seen). I mostly remember early 2000s rap and it being all about grills, girls, and money.
