Can I just get till the end of time, last hope, and integrity & faithlessness and have the whole story or is there background I need elsewhere?

Sort of?

There is an overarching plot. Last Hope deals with humanities first forays into space for example. However only the first and second are 'directly related' and the fifth is basically stand-alone.

I don't know but the little I played of Second Story did feel like I was supposed to know more than I did. (considering the title that just might make sense). but I can't know for sure without playing more of them.

What barely passable "story" there is in that series is all over the place.

1 and 2 are the closest thing to being connected story wise. Me, I only played the first 3, and honestly have no intention of bothering with the 4th or even 5th. The ps2 star ocean game till the end of time is a natural stopping point for the series quite frankly.

1-2 tell a coherent story. 3 is its own thing, but ties into the history of the first two to an extent and tells the most meta story out of the series. Last Hope is a prequel to 1-3, because they really don't have anywhere else to go after the events of 3. I&F may as well be its own thing, as it does little to tie back to the rest of the series outside of its battle system and the fact that there is a member of the Kenny lineage in the cast. Its difficulty curve is also the equivalent of a college professor who comes to class, passes out drunk during the lecture, and still includes the material he should have covered on the exam. Don't bother with it.

I disagree. For example, 4 was pathetically easy if you utilized Reimi and knew how to properly build the bonus board. I'll agree 3 could be a ****ing ***** due to how clunky it's combat system was; but 5 wasn't any harder than a Tales game for the most part.
