When someone is being bullied, or someone is being discriminated against, or illegal activities are happening, or, more to the point, the management are making people do illegal things...have you EVER known HR to get off their asses and intervene? Ever?

This is like a bedtime story, or something. The HR department that did something. Or a fantasy film.

They do something if the claims are actually valid. But in my experience most employees trying to make a claim like that are wrong and are just being emotional and overreacting.

Somehow my grievance that my boss was yelling at me for disagreeing with her ended on me getting a lecture on being a team player, as well as a scolding and denial of the annual company bonus for having a "bad attitude".

Though that was probably less HR than the shitty boss getting the last word with no one to go to with concerns about them.

hr doesn't exist to protect or help you, it exists to prevent the company from being sued

You see...I get your complaint. But how is that an HR concern? Being yelled at is not something HR gets concerned with. At all. They are there to protect the company and make sure no behavior is going on that can hurt the company.

In other words, if something actually bad was going on that could result in an actual lawsuit against the company, they will intervene. But not if it's just your boss yelling at you. And that brings me back to my first post in this topic.

ITT, people who dont know anything about HR.

HR encompasses not just handling stupid complaints or giving resignation letters. They encompass recruitment, training & development, compensation, performance evaluation, benefits, and all other employee admin stuff.
They're of utmost importance especially when firms are facing manpower issues such as a sudden retrenchment or departure of employees. Otherwise yeah, pretty common sense job and attractive to females for some reason (hmmmm). But idk companies also tend to be biased toward pretty females to put in HR. Ok, they're also useful in employee retention, which means coming up with benefits and hosting those dumb orientation games, company parties and whatnot.

. There's some more technical aspects like employee laws and recruitment, the latter is a thorn in the ass. You could say the defining aspect of HR is people skills, which also involves some random psychology (which is why some school courses offer HR and psychology together).

Interpersonal relationships can be a factor to HR depending on company policy, particualy since driving a long term employee to tears and self harm because they aren't being brought to heel is something that can lead to lawsuit, or at least lead to bad turnover, morale, and other things that hurt productivity.

An believe me, it wasn't me being a snowflake. It was the 4th time before I made a compalint.
