Omgggg lmao Spar+Sesso the Water Shaman is so cute!!! Are there any more shamans I can meet so far? I only have water and fire. Also, is Spar a decent character at all? He/She seems like a very big-brain technical supportbot with all her/his status and debuff spells, whereas Im a bigger fan of just straightforward attackers and offensive/healing magic users. Mushroom Spar is too cute tho lol

There are 2 you meet via story: Fire and Wind. Fire you've already got, and Wind you get when you go to Skytower (ironically in the middle of the ocean) as part of the story. You have Water already, from Nimufu's Tower. You get Earth by donating 2000 zenni to the Earth shrine at Farmtown, then heading back to Rand's Mom's backyard in Farmtown after the events of Evrai, and inspecting the clump of moving dirt. You get Holy underneath the church south of Tiga's Hideout, and Devil is underneath Gate, in one of the doors blocked by the dragon's hands.

I finished up the Highland quest, it seems. The dungeon was really long, but honestly I feel like there wasnt a whole lot of substance, I was expecting a bit more plot. Is there any way I can go back? I missed a couple chests and when I got to the room with the boss it wouldnt let me go back.

I don't think there is, as Shupkay's machine basically destroys the entire edifice.

I just had a random encounter with 2 Mammoth enemies... holy shit.

I actually stumbled across my hometown too, guess Im not supposed to go there yet. I beat the soldier with Rand, and now I gotta go to the cathedral to save his mom.

I made sure to pay 2000Zenny to Namanda, when does the earth Shaman become available?

I have that one evil old guy from the dreamscape into my town, what spells does he teach?

I decided I want Ryu, Nina and Bosch on my final for the last dungeon, whos a decent 4th member in respects to good Shaman fusions etc?

He teaches 4 spells, 4 times (can be the same spell.) You need to speak to him at 1 HP and 0 AP. I believe there is a fish (Bait - "Looks Awful" in original translation) or item that drops you to 1HP, as for 0 AP you're just gonna have to cast spells that will bring you down to 0AP, you might want to toy around with Shaman Forms that increase Max AP for this and get a multiple of 4 and cast heal a bunch of times. When you talk to him like this his mood increases, and eventually he offers to teach you a spell. Missle is the best, I'm not sure what they call it in the retranslations, but Missle is the one you get when his Dragon Tear Mood is at max - rainbow. Maybe it's called Simoon? That's what it's called in Breath of Fire 3. If he isn't offering the best spell (his mood not at rainbow yet), then just decline and keep talking to him. You might have to leave and come back I don't remember.

I recommend giving this spell to at least Bosch, and probably Spar. Nina and Sten learn this spell on their own (as well as the "secret" character), so I wouldn't bother giving it to either of them.

I recommend against taking Nina and taking *secret character* instead, because Bosch's best form is Holy + Devil, while Nina needs Wind and also Holy, so you'd have to pick one major form over the other. Either way Spar would be a good candidate.

Im not using Bleu/Deis for the principle of it, shes not really a part of the story too much, even though I liked her in the first game.

Question for BoF 3 and 4, is her name Deis or Bleu in those games? I prefer Bleu tbh. I plan on playing the psp version of 3 and the psx version of 4

She is called Deis in 3 and 4. If you aren't going to take Bleu, I recommend NOT making Nina her ultimate form, because it's basically cheating. Besides, Bosch's ultimate form is too cool to pass up.

I like how BoF 2 Nina is no-nonsense and strong-willed, as opposed to the pansy BoF 1 Nina.

gotta say, good game design choice making the boat and airship of these games into animals that can be called upon, that way you never forget where you park, and its never a hassle trekking all the way back to the ship

I.E. Make sure you have your Township fully set up before you open the final dungeon.

IIRC there's one you can't get with the Township though due to the place being a very narrow coast inbetween the sea and mountains... so you have to at least get that one first.

Just beat the Necromancer boss. Had to retry it a few times, Zombie status is no joke!

stakes are pretty damn high now, things are getting exciting. And dont worry I already got the Life Armor and Emperor Edge from fishing

What? Who argues that? It's a very basic game, with quite a lot of tedium. It's a good game...but best ever? Ehhh?

It also suffers from a terrible encounter rate which makes the game hard...especially the mansion area in the start.

This. it's good, but I rank it far down as far as best RPGs of all time are concerned. It might be top 30.

Megami Tensei (Part 1 of Kyuyyaku, on the SNES, Im in the final dungeon, Ive just been collecting demons to fuse to make that one Dragon God before finishing up the game)

after BoF2 and finishing those 2 that Ive been putting off, I think Ill start Ys 2 on psp. I finished Ys book 1 and to my surprise I really liked it but just wanted to add a breather in between me playing books 1 and 2.

PS1 and PSP are virtually the same, except for a palette change of a particular enemy to avoid Ultraman copyright issues I think, removal of a "can't unsee" frame in Ryu's dragon transformation animation easter egg, and widescreen. Oh and a fishing mode. Might as well go with the PSP version, but it doesn't really matter.

Beat the game last night. Some thoughts. UNMARKED SPOILERS, in case anyone hasnt played this yet.

-First third of the game (clearing Boschs name) was fun, the detours we had to keep taking with new scenarios popping up was frankly hilarious, did not really feel like padding.

-I feel like Aspar shouldve somehow been incorporated into the team before beating Trout/clearing Boschs name, to make him feel like more of the team

-idk why but I feel like there shouldve been a 2 year timeskip or something after clearing Boschs name and before the demon sighting in Gate. Let the party enjoy some victory, Yknow?

-Abyss Tower/Infini was ridiculous lmao. The highest encounter rate+those ridiculous segments with the weird background and disorienting staircase layout. I remember BoF1 having a big final dungeon too but this was just asinine lol

-Wouldve been nice if more of the shamans were available early, but obviously I understand why that wasnt the case

-The second act of the game, which I consider everything after Trout until getting to Farma, was good. A lot of cool set pieces like the trees mind and the bridge battle in Highland. A lot of it still had the same level of stakes as in the first act, felt more adventury than epic, if that makes sense

-speaking of the second act, while I liked it, there was wayyy too much case of broken bridge syndrome. It was a huge fetch quest that just kept getting longer. Gotta investigate Gate, but first we need a Grassman. To get the Grassman we need to catch an Uparupa. Gotta introduce the Grassman to the Elder Tree. But first gotta get the Magic Pillow from Melodia. But first gotta get the Magic Flute from Highland. But then gotta find the Diet Wizard. And he needs a Magic Mushroom. Next gotta go inside the fat queen. Finally! Got the Magic Pillow and can now go enter the Trees mind. Now, the first portion of the game had this as well, but as that was supposed to be more introductory and whimsical in nature, it worked well. Here it felt like a long (somewhat entertaining, still) fetchquest

-After finishing up in Farma, the game streamlines a bit, and the quality really picks up. Narratively definitely the best part of the game is the third act, for sure.

-Shouldve done more with Patty imo

-Ryu is Ryu
-Bosch was nice, funny little rascal goofball. Definitely a useful party member, dedicated healer with decent offensive options
-Lin I really liked her character, it feels like she got a lot more screen time than others. As a unit, early game she is a damn beast, easily the heaviest hitter. As the game progresses and the enemies become stronger and bulkier I feel like her lack of utility and frailness hurt her
-Nina is the one time in a video game Id spam black magic even in random encounters, she has a nearly bottomless pool of AP to draw from. Love the hair and black wings, coolest looking Nina for sure. So much cooler than BoF1 Nina, and more useful imo, especially since she got Rejuvenate. Really liked her no-nonsense attitude.
-Rand was an amazing tank, with healing Magic to boot. Probably one of the best party members. Kind of bland in the character development side until you see him in his hometown and with his mom.
-Sten aesthetically is really cool, I love his sprite and attack animations both in regular and shamanized form. I think I liked his solo episode the best, if were not counting Tapeta.
-Tapeta I did not like as a unit, but his personality immediately punched me in the face as something I like. I absolutely loved the whole Ft.Nageur episode, easily the funniest portion of the game. Ft.Nageur is obviously to introduce Tapeta, but I dont really see it as his episode, seeing as he wasnt even playable for it. Tapeta felt the most removed from the story, as after Ft.Nageur he didnt really have much to say or much motivation. When getting the Infinity spell for Ryu at the end of the game, though, his speech was the best by a mile
-Aspar was harder to get attached to seeing as how he gets recruited so late, but he was cool, too. I liked his township conversations. His fusions were cool, although you only really get to use the Mushroom Girl until the endgame. Seemed like a very balanced, generalist character, so the flexibility is nice.

-Ray being a dragon was something I did not see coming at all, but it was pretty cool. Hes pretty much a fool to Ryu. If Ryu hadnt ran away with Bosch all those years ago he wouldve ended up the exact same.

-Tapetas sister and father were hilarious. Ft.Nageur was a hoot.

-The catacombs underneath that one tiny church (where you fight the Father Manson/Necromancer) was downright scary. So unsettling, especially Manson and his dialogue. The third portion of this game was so damn good.

-The church scene where Father Habalk tortures and torments Claris was tense af. Legit had no idea what was going to happen. Evil bastard.

-Father Habalk looks like Dr.Wily!

-The final boss had so much HP I honestly felt like I was doing something wrong. Was I supposed to use Infinity again? No, he was just that beefy.

-I got the best ending with the Township. The scene was epic and cool, but when you think about it... the whole concept is hilarious lol. Instead of sealing the gate with mythical dragon powers, you seal it by dumping a small city on top of it, lmao

-I feel like the normal ending where Ryu transforms into the dragon has way more emotional weight to it, but the township ending was at least done well

I think thats all the thoughts I have off the top of my head. Great game, the best part is it finishes really strong.

thanks, definitely wanted to get my thoughts out while still fresh. Obviously I just finished, but Id say Id give this game like an 8.5 or 9 overall. Whereas with the first game Id probably give a 6.5 or 7. I have a list in my notes app with all the games Ive played and have scores assigned to each one. Maybe Ill share it once it gets a bit bigger

I fucking love the BoF games. They are definitely a different beat compared to most JRPGs. The fact that Capcom made them blows me away. I even like the first one. I guess tbh though I just REALLY like transforming into a fucking DRAGON GOD. hehe

Your summary is why I really like BoF2. I need to finish the game so I can experience an actual, non-broken translation of the game.

BoF3 has a lot of the same charms, but it feels like more of a slog at times. I don't like the dungeons that much. That said, the story is pretty good, and it hands down has the best battle/dragon system.

Just beat Lucifer in Megami Tensei 1. Good lord this game took a long time. I literally started it in Oct 2018 and just ran out of steam a good number of times. Its a super hard game to get into (which is why I took so long to jump back in), but holy hell is it fun. Just pure gameplay.
