This whole scenario is one of the reasons why the Buu saga was so disappointing. We see Gohan get whupped by Fat Buu, then he's sidelined for the majority of the arc to get an uber powerup by training with the Kais, then when all hope is lost, Gohan roars into the scene.

We, as an audience, were still high off Gohan's SSj2 fight with Cell, and we're SO ready for another helping of Gohan kicking total ass.

Then by pure, uncut plot stupidity, Gohan gets sidelined because Goku has to be the winner.

Also, no he shouldn't have. Gohan should have. Or Vegito should have. Anybody but regular-ass Goku (or Gotenks, because Gotenks is actually trash)
