pastors already pay taxes. if you tax churches you're mostly taking money away from the impoverished people they help in local communities.

They have to maintain the building, they have employees, they have programs and events in the community, often they have schools associated with them as well.

This seems like a trolly question that you didn't actually want to know the answer to tbh

There are honest churches out there and they need to pay their bills and employees. Others have the money go to paying for the pastor's mistress' abortion or whatever.

I've volunteered at local charities and I keep hearing complaints that Christians prioritize conversion first over help second.

mega churches have problems beyond just taxes, yes

they're essentially nonprofits with religious themes, and non-profits are widely hit/miss in accountability

the churches i've been in contact with are local churches that spend thousands of dollars on poor people when big unexpected expenses pop up. severe illnesses that insurance companies won't cover. water heaters that go bust. etc. if you tax these churches you're cutting into how much money churches can give those people.

A Medicare for all plan or a Public Option would be a better way to combat medical expenses.

They'll have money left over for water heaters.
