at the ring picking stage.

my gf is leaning towards a ring with a gemstone and a couple of small diamond accents.

What is a reasonable price range for a ring? I'm seeing things at a place (kinda fancy, i think, but I don't know much about this stuff) we're looking at in the $2400-$4000 range.

Is that reasonable?

i think the one i got my wife was like 1500 iirc
but that was 11 years ago
and it was the one she picked

if you're asking about your range, if you can afford it then it's reasonable
it's probably more than i'd want to pay and i can easily afford it, but i'd resist on principal to some extent

thats kinda for you to decide. when we got married we went a bit cheaper than that because she didnt want to spend that much on a ring.

some see a ring as an investment, others its just a ring...

Granted this was 20 years ago, but as I was mentioning in another thread, I think my wife's ring was in the $1500-2000 range and my band was maybe a $1000 at the most. But I couldn't even tell you what karat my wife's diamond is. I know my ring was just 24K gold with the greek key design cut into it.

I would say spend whatever you both feel comfortable that you can afford. I like my second band (my first was getting to small for my fingers) is a tungsten ring my wife bought for $100 or so, and I like it just as much as my first. It's what it represents, to me, more than it's cost. But I'll fully admit I was trying my best to impress my wife with the biggest diamond I could affords so :shrugs: lol

This is entirely cultural depending on your values. Personally I think it's a silly thing to spend money on especially if money is tight, but for some people it's important.

I'd say 2-3k is reasonable. My wife's was closer to 3k. Mine was a little over 1k. I got a thick palladium ring with a cool design.

I'd share that story but Sunhawk is here and I fear the spreadsheet. Let's just say it was an insurmountable change in circumstance and nobody did anything wrong.

We're both broke atm so $200 was out budget. She's not much of a ring person so she insists that spending over that much feels ridiculous to her. She's a really frugal person.

It depends on the person, the place, and your finances. What is good for me isn't good for you and vice versa. Like the one I got for my wife (back when we were only engaged) was on sale and the total price was something like 68,000 dollars (after sale price. Was closer to 120,000 before sale). Usually as a random gift I buy her jewelry in the 14,000 range. But this probably isn't the right price for you so trust your judgement.

hahahahaha

Sunhawk has a bizarre habit of recalling very minor details of my life from quite literally 10 years ago or more. Not even significant stuff but stuff I've almost entirely forgotten about. He also lies a lot about it, presumably for fun.

Either way someone quipped that he must be keeping a spreadsheet and updating it every time I make another topic, so these days I'm reluctant to give away much personal info.

but for an object that's the size of a nickel? i could never. beside that, why do you waste your time here? with that kind of money i'd be living it up.

Gladius sounds like this spoiled rich girl I know who found out that porsches cost upwards of 70k and said "oh, I thought they'd be more than that"

Tbf though her perspective comes from not understanding how money works at all, and not from earning so much money herself that things are relative, so maybe this is different

My wife and I were pretty broke when we got engaged/married, I think I spent $1500ish total on both engagement and wedding band, and my wedding band was $100 or so. >_>

I did get her a new set for I dunno a few thousand for our 10th.

if it's not a diamond center there's not as much of a cartel behind the price, so you should be able to spend a lot less--just be open to differing gemstone options, and don't buy from the big jewelery companies. small business jewelers can usually give a much better deal and they're better at making the settings

Not bothering reading the thread but its probably mostly lol diamonds as usual.

Just get something with uniqueness while still adhering to her tastes, and is affordable. Most major retailers will offer 0% financing too, which gives you a bit more flex if desired. Finally if you have ethical qualms about diamonds then just go manufactured instead of natural.
