NBC News spoke with dozens of voters in Utah in the days immediately following the Senate's vote to acquit the president. Most identified themselves as Republicans who had supported Romney in 2018 and said that regardless of their opinion of the president, Romney's decision to go against his party was one that they understood and respected for its honesty. Many said they would not hold it against the first-term senator when he faces re-election in 2024.

To be fair, Utah is probably the only very conservative state or region that could realistically claim to have never jumped on the Trump train. They had a significant conservative third party option in 2016 and Mormons have never really wholly accepted Trump to the degree that evangelicals have.

Trump actually wasn't very popular in Utah. If there wasn't a supreme court seat open they might have gone with a write-in candidate in 2016

Not to mention that, at least superficially, Romney seems to be in better shape than Biden or Bernie, so I don't see age being a prohibitive factor for him assuming that the GOP does return to sanity after Trump (which is sadly a long shot). Hell, if you asked the average person, they'd probably assume he was in his mid-60s at most. --- Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less. ... Copied to Clipboard!
