https://www.thedailybeast.com/chris-wallace-tells-mitt-romney-that-trump-will-never-forgive-you-for-this

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) sat down with Fox News anchor Chris Wallace to discuss his decision to vote to convict President Donald Trump on abuse of power. The former GOP presidential nominee noted that the political consequences that fall on me as a result of that are going to be extraordinary, prompting Wallace to bluntly point out: You realize this is war. Donald Trump will never forgive you for this.

I know in my heart that Im doing what is right, Romney answered. I understand theres going to be an enormous consequence. And I dont have a choice in that regard. Later in the interview, when asked about the blowback from the famously thin-skinned president, Romney said he understood it will be substantial but that he had to abide by the oath he swore to God.

Hasn't Mitt always been anti-Trump? He and McCain...once they were able to give up further political aspirations, they became more real.

No. He was more than ready to sell his soul to get a place in the administration back in 2016 and rolled over for Trump's endorsement in 2018. Dude is a hack, and people really need to stop lionizing literal Mitt fucking Romney.

I wish he would run this election.

It's sad, actually I think had McCain lived long enough him and Romney would have been able to get more votes to impeach. Just in theory the fact the republicans have tossed aside 8 years of representation of the party like it was nothing, they truly are an unforgiving bunch of degenerates.

The way I see it, I honestly think that Romney is banking on a huge public backlash against Trump after he leaves office if he loses in 2020. If that happens, Romney would be the literal only untarnished prominent Republican on the national level and be a prohibitive front runner in 2024 or 2028 (he'd be 77 or 81 respectively).

Or even if that doesn't happen, it's a legacy move and he represents the only somewhat anti-Trump conservative state, so it's not exactly cause for concern for him for a reelection bid anyway.

Either way, I'd vote for him again. Already did in the 2008 primary and in the 2012 primary and general.

While every political move ever can be seen as "what does this person have to gain from saying this", I still think this is a brave move when cast against today's GOP.

The only thing negative thing I remember from back then that blew up was his comment about how he doesn't care about the 49% of people who don't pay income taxes, or something.

Super rich and out of touch was basically the marching orders from the Dems in 2012 and RINO among Republicans in 2012/2008. He was basically the wealthy suburban Republican dream candidate, and now that portion of the party is basically stuck hoping that the GOP gets less crazy or the Dems don't put up a candidate that wants to tax us too much.

Shame, too. I honestly think we'd be much better off if he had won in 2012. And an established Romney probably would've beaten Clinton in 2016, too. Then 2020 would be a battle between established and moderated Republicans and a wide open Dem field.

Who would actually vote for him, though?

All the Democrat voters praising Romney now would never in a million years actually support him. All the Republicans wont vote for him because he crossed the party line. Right or wrong, people remember that shit. Plus, they wont vote for him because he already lost to Obama and he lost to Trump. He seems like a nice guy, but I think people tend to shy away from that instinctively.

Yeah, he's one of very few politicians that I've always genuinely liked and was happy to vote for instead of shrugging and voting for the slightly more okay candidate. John Kasich being another I've felt that way about, both before Trump political aspirations were really a known thing. Glad they are the two that've stood against him.
