Pessimism basically means being a Negative Nancy, a Debbie Downer, seeing the glass half empty all of the time, being angry.

I personally think it's a disease and I think more people needs more awareness of it with everyone and within themselves. Just looking on social media and even on CE, it's pretty obvious how pessimistic people are with everything and it is frightening. What's funny is almost all the people I've engaged with who is being pessimistic will never admit themselves as one, or they prefer to redefine it as a "realist" instead.

Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

Not exactly. Being pessimistic literally means you're thinking the worst or more of a negative light about it. Being an optimistic literally means you're open minded to the situation. Always expecting the worst can't possibly be a good trait, IMO.

Pessimism is just a symptom of being frustrated over your own lack of happiness.
So many depressed people roam these boards.

This is what I think too but not a lot of people will acknowledge this.

It gets on my nerves. Too much optimism can be annoying too, though. You need to find a balance.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst is the way to go about life.

So you need a healthy amount of both optimism and pessimism

Really? I've always thought of it as simply being open minded about the situation unless it's extremely obvious the outcome is going to be.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

True but it's projecting something about yourself for sure IMO. People who are so jaded and so spiteful have to had gone through something to be so uptight all the time.

you don't have to be depressed to be a pessimist

This. Add humor into it and I'm cool being around you. If you're just a drain on my energy then you can fuck off

As long as it doesn't cripple you then pessimism is fine I think. I'm sure optimism has potential for more happiness, but at the same time it has higher potential for disappointment, which can be be devastating to some. I don't think anyone is 100% one or the other, that would lead to a pretty disastrous life.

Don't mind pessimism when you have a good reason to be. It can be a drain on people around you when you don't know when to turn it off though.

When a person is pessimistic about everything all the time, I think that says more about the person than it does of the things that annoy them.
