Ewwww

Reminds me of when in the late 80s or early 90s our neighbor behind our house had their sewage pipe burst and it came up into our yard. Was very gross

I don't know where you live, but I would think raw sewage is something that they would have to come fix immediately no matter what as it poses a health risk.

I moved in just two weeks ago so this could not have been me.

I definitely wasn't accusing you. I doubt you're flushing feminine products or have kids that use too much TP at once.

Unlikely. I think it was more so the feminine products. Toilet paper would probably take quite a few consecutive times.

Been there, don't envy it... basically resulted in dredging and redoing the entire line because of roots all throughout, including the city's side under the road. Also discovered we had a house trap this whole time... basically like a u bend under your sink, but a big one for the sewer in the ground.

Those 2 weeks were the most stressing if any hint of 'I gotta go' crept up. The main horror was 2 weeks, but it was rather a slow burn of "something's fucked up, but not sure what" for about 4-5 years.

Hope they get it resolved sooner, because it grinds stuff to a halt.

I mean if it is going to take weeks it means this place uninhabitable so they either have to find me somewhere else to stay or let me out of my lease.

Depends on how bad it is and the cause... like I said, hopefully it's something small and simple.

Never know, could just need a drain auger on the main cleanout and not total pipe replacement.

So they snaked the drain but didnt clean up/sanitize the surrounding area. I reached out to my landlord about this and got ignored. Isnt it like illegal to expect me to clean raw sewage?

I've had sewage flood my entire finished basement. The sewers in our area are really old and apparently full of cracks and hole and such. If it rains enough, the water table can get so high that it starts flooding into the sewer system. The system can't handle it and the waste will find the lowest outlet - in this case, the basement bathrooms in my area. Well, it rained something like 9 inches in two hours. My entire block had sewage flooding into their basements. Some people had literal FEET of sewage in their basements.

It definitely needs to be cleaned and sanitized properly. The restoration companies that handled the cleanup in my area were basically in full biohazard suits. Your situation might not require all that, depending on how much entered your home, but it's definitely something your landlord should take care of.

around 8-9 years ago when i was renting an apartment in a complex the landlord sent a letter to every tenant explaining to not flush tampons down the toilet only TP and waste. he was going to raise rents if it happened again.

the cause of the blockage was 6 tampons.

When I was in my apartment, the guy below me had sewage spill back over from his toilet because it had nowhere else to go. There was a pipe blockage (like the main pipe that took all the sewage from 2-3 different apartment buildings), and it ruined all of his expensive camera equipment and pretty much a lot of his personal property. The guy ended up moving out and they had to bring in a professional cleaning/restoration crew for his apartment for the next person to rent.

I always advise people to never rent an apartment on the first floor for this reason (assuming there are no basement bathrooms in the building).

How does snaking a drain fix a leak?

it wasnt a leak, the drain was clogged up and it overflowed into the basement.

How does a drain overflow into the basement without destroying the first floor?

It overflowed in the basement, not the first floor.
