It actually scares me viewing video footage of it, because it's so like old-style cartoons. They even have the Pac-Man eyes, and the fucking scary grins on their faces.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly good at games but I enjoyed it a lot. For the most part the bosses are quick enough to make repeated attempts not feel too frustrating. You also learn new things and patterns as you do (some exceptions like the dragon do exist)

Anyways it is a wonderful game. Absolutely wonderful. Everything in hand drawn with care, and really invokes the feeling that youre playing a cartoon from the 20s. The bosses are also hard, but fair. Except the robot. Fuck the robot.

Originally it was only going to be boss levels. I think the run and gun levels were added after Microsoft funded them.

It's an absolute masterpiece, legitimately one of the most memorable games of all time.

Despite having beaten it, I do still think it's too difficult. If the difficulty were toned down, I'd be saying "one of the best games of all time", but MDHR wanted a certain gameplay style, and went with it. I get it, but it definitely makes the game not very accessible, which is a huge shame.

Personally, I grew up watching a 50 Greatest Cartoons VHS that had a lot of cartoons from the era of animation Cuphead emulates; many of them are equal parts 'children's entertainment' and 'frighten the little bastards into obedience.' Those old cartoons had a unique creepiness when they chose to go dark - huge devilish grins / glowing eyes, scratchy audio, haunting bass quartet vocals, things like that.

I wouldn't say Cuphead directly exudes this feeling, but it can conjure up subtle memories of such things if you're familiar with the old cartoons.
