Chinese officials in Denmark are demanding an apology from the daily Jyllands-Posten newspaper for publishing a cartoon showing five coronavirus particles on the Chinese flag instead of stars.

In a Tuesday statement, Chinas embassy in the country said Jyllands-Posten and the Danish artist Niels Bo Bojesen should apologize for the image, captioned Coronavirus, which appeared in Mondays edition of the paper, Reuters reported.

Without any sympathy and empathy, it has crossed the bottom line of civilized society and the ethical boundary of free speech and offends human conscience, the embassy said.

I was expecting something much worse, while still thinking China should grow a pair.

But that cartoon is so barely edgy that China should grow several pairs, for that matter.

It originates with Gui Minhai, a Chinese-born Swedish scholar and book publisher. He lived in Hong Kong and published ~200 books about Chinese politics and political figures.
He and four others vanished in the Causeway Bay Books Disappearances in 2015, and some months later China released a video of him confessing breaking a traffic law in 2003.
Sweden have tried to get him released since then, which China have disliked.
He won a price late last year, a reward given to writers in exile, which made the Chinese ambassador to threaten Sweden with serious consequences.

two things i can think of right now.

one: there's a Swe-Chino man who at one point published some criticism, or a scandal or something toward China, Gui Minhai, and he was arrested during a trip in Thailand 2015.
Sweden has been very vocal about getting him released ever since.
most recently, a Swedish foundation awarded him some literature award, which really pissed them off.

two: there was an incident with a couple Chinese tourists 2018, who in the middle of the night tried to get a room at a hotel that was full, without having a booked room.
and when they were refused, and started causing a fuss, they were escorted out by police a couple blocks down the road...or as they said it: "to the middle of the woods"
then, on top of that, a Swedish comedy show (copy of Colberts show basically) made fun of the whole incident, China in general, and Chinese propaganda specifically.

Dalai lama visited Sweden in 2018.
Later the same month, a Chinese family went to a Swedish hotel one day too early. The hotel had no empty rooms, so they told them to leave. They wanted to stay in the lobby over the night. The Swedish police had to come and remove them. Then suddenly they started to scream You are killing us, you are killig us!!! and falling over dramatically right in front of a hidden camera, and it was uploaded to Chinese media moments later.
As the video spread, the Chinese embassy in Sweden demanded an apology from the government, saying that the police actions had "violated the basic human rights of the Chinese citizens".
