There's not a reason to not be worried. Plagues have come and gone in human history and killed untold numbers of people. We're long overdue for one in all honesty. Sucks for those affected by this.

I live in Wuhan.

I had a flight booked to Malaysia on 23rd at 14:00, unluckily for me they locked the city down at 10:00 so Im stuck here now. To compound the already terrible situation my brother had to be sent to Wuhan for an injury to his arm on 22nd and cant go back home. So both him and his wife are now staying with me. They had planned to completely ban all transport in the city, public transport was all suspended on 23rd. Taxis were banned on 24th and the plan was to shut down all driving completely. Ive since heard it was rescinded but then I also saw a document detailing the repercussions of driving so who knows.

That being said Im not that worried. I have enough food, gas and electric for now. The stores are still open. I will say though that it is worse than reported obviously because the local government is trying to keep a lid on numbers and only release 100% confirmed cases. The actual number is much higher and people are dying.

How amazing is it we have CEmen that actually live in Wuhan? A city no one has ever heard of but we got a CEman there. So cool. It's like we're everywhere.

It's definitely much, much higher. Also, the incubation period is about 14 days, we will truly see how bad it has gotten in another 7-10 days. There are claims on Wechat stating anywhere from 10,000 to 90,000 dead already. Families are claiming that their loved ones who have died are being immediately cremated and not tested to see if it was the virus that killed them or not.

I live less than 1,000km from Wuhan. We were supposed to go to Shanghai on Tuesday for 2 nights (my parents are arriving from Canada Tuesday afternoon). We just canceled that trip and instead put my parents on a plane here from Shanghai instead. To say the least, we are worried. At first the worry was only for my parents and daughter, as it was only extremely dangerous in the elderly with preexisting medical conditions (my dad is a type 2 diabetic, my mom has asthma and hypertension). But with the confirmation of a 36 year old in perfect health being killed by the virus it is safe to say we are a fair bit more worried now. We've left the house twice in 6 days. We likely won't leave it again until we go to pick my parents up at the airport. They'll be here for a month. We have to wait and see what happens over the next week or so to see if we can actually do anything with them while they are here. I also expect if things don't improve that schools will not reopen right away either.

That's like being afraid for a relative in Philadelphia because of a disease outbreak in Indianapolis. It's like 650 miles away.

I understand diseases spread, but don't give into fearmongering.

Not really. We know the mortality rate and it has been consister whether with the unconfirmed reports of the number of infected to dead ratio and the confirmed reports. It sits consistently at 3%

I can tell you now that the most recent figures for Wuhan has more deaths than cured. Its something like 700 cases, 39 deaths and 31 recoveries.

Apparently it started by lunatic locals eating wild animals. Its unsure which animal but reports suggests its either bat, pangolin or snake.
It baffles me that there are still people so misinformed that they legit believe mixing wild animal blood with their fried rice will make them stronger. Like how is this a thing in modern city? In a major city? In a major city known for having tons of fibre optic industry and universities

Animal to human transmission is the most common way these illnesses are created

I took an epidemic disease course as part of my on-gonig medical training. The rules about an epidemic are:

it is a virus
it comes from an animal that has never produced a similar virus that affected humans
there is no immunity
There are neither drugs nor a vaccine to stop it
it cannot be cured until someone develops a vaccine
Treatment is supportive not curative.

Coronaviruses are a group that cause diseases in animals and birds. In humans, the virus causes respiratory infections that were mild in previous strains. So, this is clearly a new strain. The epidemic is in too early a stage to know its mortality rate yet.

Therefore, the assurances from the Chinese that they have everything under control is a ploy to avoid panic. The epidemic has been greatly facilitated by Chinese New Year as there is a great deal of traveling in crowded conditionss and a guy in Singapore already died from it, indicating how fast it can spread.

This shows how vulnerable humans are. While this virus isn't as deadly as others, spreading a virus has become easier than ever.

Just imagine some thanos loving eco-fascist who wants to wipe out a large number of humans to save the planet from climate change. Biological warfare is the way to do it.

I'm not too worried about coronavirus but I fear both China and America are entertaining the idea biological warfare and the Coronavirus is testing how well the world can contain a virus. Valuable information for national security to say the least

I'm at a 5.
I'm not currently worried about it since I got tons of other more immediate stuff to worry about.
However, I am aware of what's going on and knowing it's spreading at a fast rate (despite still being at low numbers... but those low numbers are multiplying pretty quick) has me glancing over every now and then to check on things like this information pic below (the Wuhan flu is kind of like that enemy in a survival horror video game who is in the distance and isn't an immediate threat and there is a possibility they may just waddle away and nothing happens with them. However, you keep an eye on them just in case they notice you and start running at you from the distance with a chainsaw while screaming at you):

Worrying about it wont do me any good. My job has nothing to do with contagious diseases as such I would not be needing to come up or assist in plans concerning this.
