Reality TV killed them.

YouTube is better for this content nowadays anyways.
Tons and tons and tons of science, history, travel, etc. stuff.

They became like MTV and MTV2

Basically you need to go to their alternate channels for actual crap they used to show. For discovery you should check out science. It's not discovery, but if you can get nat geo wild it's got animal stuff. Which reminds me how piss animal planet has become... for a while they've been doing tree houses and other garbage. !? How the hell is this animal related other than to try and say people who live in trees are animals. So you need to go to other stuff for animals.

For history you should check out AHC, think it's american heroes channel iirc. Either way they show those old ww2 and military stuffs. Not sure where to go for non-military stuff.

So yeah, as mentioned their main content stuff is bleh. I didn't mind American Chopper when it first arrived as it was somewhat interesting. Little did I know it'd pave the way to this.

I suppose it's not completely bad, but you gotta really reach for it... such as knight fight giving mild history lessons on weaponry/armies, or american pickers being history of random artifacts.

Reality programming destroyed television. Most themed channels no longer air what's in their name. You can't learn anything from TLC anymore. MTV (at least in Canada) focuses mostly on sitcoms, crime dramas, TMZ, and reality shows. CMT doesn't play country music. and so forth

Hell, I remember when it had people have sex.

They did a whole week (not like shark week, more like 2-4 hours a night starting at 9 or 10 pm) or so on it. They even had two people copulate and not move, essentially just soak in one of those... MRI machines. That's when they discovered vaginas literally suck inwards to try and vacuum semen in.

My parent's didn't want me to watch it as a teenager, nor did they give me any talk. I had to literally sneak it in since they wouldn't even 'monitor' me watching it. Heaven forbid I know what the hell's going on down there. Though it did give me a 'proud' moment when I was the only person in my 8th grade science class to know why testicles were outside the body.

I was there when they showed a cross section scan of penetration on non-hbo/ppv tv. Good times...
