Why have you given up on that
Pages and pages of job listings with the best fit being thousands of miles away and requiring a master's plus several years of experience.

Every attempt at a step in that direction resulting in employer ghosting.

And that damn GPA field on applications. I admit it. I didn't give a crap about history and lit. What I don't get is why that matters.

hard work = success.

hard work =/= success. You live in a fantasy or maybe just got lucky if you think hard work means anything at all. Welcome to 2020, where you're screwed just because the system exists to screw you. By the way, if you are a teacher, I hope you're atleast teaching kids how to think for themselves. Actually, if you put yourself in their shoes you might... you know what, you won't care anyways so buh bye topic.

Hard work will get you a degree of success. The illusion is in thinking that hard work is proportional to success, or evenly scaled, for that matter.

Part of it is a skewed idea of what actually qualifies as middle class. Many parts of the middle class are what we think of as the working poor. The low end is around $40k per year for the household. Single person households will often struggle getting that, but there are a ton of possibilities including what we consider crap jobs in a dual income environment. Their expectations are lower than working at Target while your wife is a waitress.

The middle class of today is like the upper class of our parents' generation. Although we feel we are worse off, we actually have MUCH more in our lives than previous generations before. How many people had cell phones in the 80s vs now? How about computers? Going back even further, what about TVs or radios? We are advancing and our perception of 'class' has changed to fit a more 'luxurious' lifestyle. Heck, even those who are struggling financially have more than the middle class of a few generations ago.

What do we really 'need' to survive? The average US household gross income is around $60k. That is about $5000 a month. If we figure average US rent is at $1400, that means that 35% of your gross income goes to rent (which is higher than the standard 30%, though), but that still leaves quite a bit for goods and services.

Man, what a bunch of doom and gloom in this topic. Ffs. Most of us live in the United States right? No one is promised a Mercedes and a milf but if you work hard, you can totally make it here. Dont you all have food and vehicles and the internet and smart phones? Video games and netflix, big tv's, a kickass animal friend, access to gyms and parks, malls and museums libraries, breweries dispensaries.... What the FUCK?

What dont you have that you want? Seriously tell me. Besides pussy maybe? That would cheer you up? Well pretty soon youll be able to buy that too, once we quit being wimps about sex, get it done Trump. Now

When was the last time you went hungry? Last year i was eating at a homeless shelter. And it was good as Fuck. In the rest of the world people are dying on the streets, starving, no clean water, being murdered and displaced by corrupt governments, blown up by religious extremists. And you think you got it bad??? Shut the fuck up! Id rather be homeless here than live somewhere else.

When i was growing up, we were so poor we used to go to this great burger stand called B Bops. And my mom would never, ever pay for cheese. She would take a cheese single we got from the poor grocery store and put it on a burger and that was a TREAT. To this day i will Not order a combo meal unless its a special occasion. You know why? Because i stay in my lane and i like it here. Kids used to make fun of us because we drove shitty vehicles. But i survived. And guess what? Now my parents are fucking loaded, we own our own ranch in one of the most beautiful states in the US and have everything we could ever want. And it feels so good because we Earned it.

Last year i was homeless too Catgirl Fondler. I didnt tell anyone. When i got out of jail i lived in my car for three months and worked two jobs. I washed my hair in the taco bell bathroom....... And it kicked fucking ass. I went to the library all the time to charge my phone and I did it all on my own because i didnt want to live with my parents. After I got settled in and got a raise, I quit one job and now i have my own apartment and i have rarely been so happy. In less than a year I did that. And I also am a felon and not particularly smart. Im good at talking and im scrappy, I dont give up, and thats about it. My job kicks ass and my boss is a mentor.

No wonder kids feel discouraged with wimps like us to look up to. Its our responsibility to inspire kids. And these sensitive teachers, I respect the hell out of what you do man, but if you cant see how great this country is you are Fucking Blind.

hard work = success.

Now, I know that this does not account for everyone, but in my 5 years of teaching middle school, I have seen that disillusionment with future success taking over. I teach in a low-income neighborhood and a lot of students are planning to live at home and work at a small job the rest of their lives, knowing that it is nearly impossible to a) move up to the middle class, b) own a home, or c) attend a university and not drown in debt. Even our most brilliant students hold mild dreams for their future, often not realizing what they can achieve with their potential.

It's no wonder that young people are fascinated with get-rich-quick archetypes, such as millionaire Youtube content creators, breakout rap artists, viral social media influencers, etc. The concept of going to college --> getting a good job --> steadily amassing wealth is so rare and difficult to conceptualize now.

Furthermore, students whose parents are renting are being pushed out of the neighborhood by rent increases, and even with students who live in a mortgaged home, many are living in garages/living rooms as their parents are still living in their parents homes and they simply do not have enough space for everyone.

The worst thing that I see more of now is that students who hold such a blatant disregard for their academics believe that they are justified in being defiant, disruptive, etc. because they think that they are better and will still become more successful than the students who are focusing on their academics. And I can't really blame those students; rather, I blame the current political and economical climate in which they are growing up which has cannot promise a successful future for those students who "do the right things."

Just my thoughts! I love my job, but it's hard not to feel frustrated at times. I just need to vent!

who the fuck are you to be telling people how to live there life also you teach middle school you make $9/hr lol but thats besides the point, thank you

That's because, by and large, hard work doesn't equate to success and hasn't since at least the 80s or so. It's important for sure, but just working hard doesn't cut it anymore and hasn't for a long time.

Ummm..... No. Thats not true.

Hard work does help you be more successful. It may not fulfill your wildest dreams right away! But working hard is Exactly how people overcome challenges and improve themselves and their situation.

I agree with most of this. Hard work by itself wont make a perfect life, but you can achieve a lot by having goals and striving towards them.

Its not just the US that has a lot going for it. If you live in any developed nation, youre already ahead of the curve, when compared to the rest of the world. Maybe thats the problem- peoples perspective on what success means is warped. Its not a fair representation of what you do have or could have, if youre constantly comparing yourself to a millionaire or billionaire. Stop that. Figure out what you want and what it takes to get it, then do the work and network with the right people for the leverage you need. Also, dont sabotage yourself. Having a baby during or right after high school, for example, is most likely going to derail your plans.

Not everyone has reason to hope, and not everyone is in a situation they can see a way out of. I read your story, and I'm happy that you found success and everything worked out. But shit comes in all shapes and sizes, and so do people. Sometimes trying your hardest just doesn't work out, and no matter how hard you think about it, you can't see a way to do anything different that would matter.

When reality shows that hard work doesn't = success, why are people going to continue to believe the lie designed to keep them from trying to attempt change and make those at the top pay their equal share, or simply not have all the benefits while the rest have few to none.

Look guys if a nobody like me can start from the bottom and get a 75k paying job then so can you.

The odds of that happening are in the low single digits and is absolute rarity and you know it. The large majority of people in a similar position won't be nearly as lucky, successful and fortunate. Also did you really start at THE bottom? Are you a minority who was born and raised in a empoverished household?
