Legislation will probably have to be written, I'm guessing that the owners of the cars will end up being liable for damages caused because they should always be ready to take control if shit gets crazy. Plus you will need it for comprehensive claims such as falling branches or vandalism.

I doubt most cars will ever be 100% automated with no manual option, so if you failed to notice and take control of your vehicle under the circumstances like busy traffic then the cause will still fall into you.

Still mandatory in most states, for no apparent reason.

Vandalism, Acts of God, etc.

This, plus probably mandated liability insurance purchase on title and/or traditional lease/loan payments that's factored into the sale and goes into the pockets of traditional insurance companies but rather than giving individual protection to drivers it provides to the car companies for failures that result in injuries and other damages.

in other words, it'll change and the timing of payments will likely be changed as well, but it won't be going away.

insurance does help when the car is totaled. when the company found it was the other driver 100% at fault they covered more than enough for him to get another used car (nicer one) though on the hook for 5 years for payments on a loan.

I don't get the mentality that auto-driving cars means you can snooze in the backseat while the car takes you to your workplace two hours away. Self-driving cars means that the car does most (or all) of the driving for you, but you still have to be 100% vigilant at the wheel in case the AI glitches or cannot deal with an unpredicted situation.

If you think sitting in a readiness state for hours is not stressful, just imagine having an irremovable bomb in your car whose fuse has a 0.2% random ignition chance any time the car's moving, and when (or if) it is lit, you have precisely 3 seconds to hit a button on the dash to disarm it. It's totally fine, though. You can sleep peacefully in the backseat. With a 0.2% chance, that bomb's never gonna explode, right?

...good lord. What in the world is in your driving history that makes it cost that much? Mine comes out to about $79 per month, and that's with one of the more historically expensive companies.

Automated public vehicles are probably the first automated vehicles we'll see en masse. I doubt they're going to have a manual control. You think they're going to hire bus drivers to sit there in case of emergency?

Um, yes? Trains, trams, and subways have drivers, and those should be the first to be 100% automated.

They have drivers now. I have a hard time seeing the job there in the future. It doesn't make any sense. Accidents happen.

I'm guessing it's the state they live in. In California I paid about that much for 2 cars with minimum liability limits.

In Washington I'm paying $100/ month for maximum liability limits (and $0 comprehensive deductible), uninsured motorist coverage, and an umbrella policy.

I think that they should be irrelevant eventually. Self driving vehicles should GREATLY reduce the number of accidents. When accidents do happen, an investigation should be launched and the car company whose programming (or lack thereof) caused the accident should pay for it.
They then fix the programming error and the issue doesn't happen again. The number of accidents thus asymptotically approaching zero.

idk man I doubt any car manufacturer would ever open themselves up to thousands if not millions of potential liability exposures.

Maybe if the tech gets good enough that it won't be a huge liability
I'm talking way in the future, of course

True, but if I'm a multi billion dollar company I'm shoving that liability off to the consumer, no doubt!

Theres waaaaay to many places, conditions, weather, roads, circumstances and so on where manual will always be superior. So I dont believe that will ever happen.

Then you're getting bent over backwards on insurance and not shopping around.

Dont blame insurance companies for charging you 200+ a month when you're too lazy to easily get a better rate.

i gotta give him the benefit of the doubt there's at least 3 choices mininum for car insurance maybe those other options weren't much cheaper or worse on benefits.

guy that blew the stop sign obviously is an asshole for just trying to get to destination B as quick as possible.

It'll adapt but still exist. Accidents will always happen in some form. Even if they somehow don't they can extend it to cover any type of damage or fault that needs repair.
