She asked me to please accept her offer to move next to her. It's an objectively worse situation for a number of reasons.

-I have a window behind me now; I'd be sitting in the middle of the office if I moved.

-I have no other desks connected to me now. If I move it will be me, my manager, and two other co-workers in a quad of desks.

-Obviously she's going to be able to see pretty much everything I'm doing, whereas no one bothers me now.

-I won't have as much space.

-There will be much more thoroughfare and chatter.

-She'll know when I get in (I'm almost always late), when I leave (usually when I say but sometimes I leave early if I'm done with work) and when I go on break. I almost always log out later after I actually get back from lunch. I usually take 45 min - 1 hour for lunch because that's normal but I log half an hour when I get back. I always get my work done and there's no reason to stay another half hour to make up for the time I'm out/eating. She has ratted on me for doing this kind of stuff before merely by logging the times I was on the team chatroom when she was working overseas.

-I currently spend about 4 hours a day watching YouTube. I know I should be doing something productive but volume is low nowadays and I've gotten pretty good at my job. When I asked her what my incentive was for moving, she said a new project. I'm fine with that but I really don't want to move. I was visibly unconfortable with her pressuring me.

Basically the only thing that makes this job tolerable is where I'm sitting now. I got primo location for my work style by chance and I don't want to give it up. I feel more productive than ever because I can control my environment somewhat.

There are only a few reasons I'm considering it instead of laughing it off and telling them thanks but no thanks. One is that I think my manager does want to give me more chances to start and finish projects which could be good for my career. That said, I don't want this as a career and took the job a year ago as a contractor to afford my own apartment. It's nothing special with pay but I just got benefits so that's important to me.

Two is that the person I'd be switching with someone wants to sit with her team. The problem I have with this, though, is that my manager seemed to come to an agreement with this person and her manager without my input. They asked me if I'd switch today which would mean hauling my monitors over and all that crap. No thanks. My manager asked me in front of other people who had a stake in my answer. The switchee said she would only do it if I'm OK with it.

And I may be weird for this but that shit really irks me when I'm put on the spot. I didn't want to seem like an asshole but I would have told her some of these reasons. I'm very blunt with everyone in private but this forces me to put a clear line in the sand when people have asked me why I didn't want to sit near them in the past when a desk opened up. I don't want to look petty but I see no upside for me personally.

My manager's manager, who was initially my manager, told HR to keep me at my desk when they wanted to move me when I became an employee. That was one of the first favors I felt I'd been done here

The other reason I'd consider it is that we have new co-workers who need to ask me questions. One of them does better with in-person instruction so she walks over a lot.

So yeah I'm pissed and might lose the thing that most keeps me together at my soul crushing corporate gig. But I can say no. My friend said I should do it but he's a yes man. I'm leaning towards telling her thanks but no thanks in private.

Exactly, and this is why I should refuse.

Yup, sounds more like an order than a request to me.

Refusing will just confirm her suspicions and she'll monitor you a different way. You're fucked

Karen in HR has your file on her desk. Just waiting to add more evidence. Seriously, someone wants your ass.

uh oh :( what makes you think that?

I really think this is just my manager wanting everyone within spitting distance of her. The problem is I'd be literally right next to her and adjacent from an obnoxious work skirter whose slack I always end up picking up.

@Axiom If youd read one more sentence, youd have gotten to this:

-I currently spend about 4 hours a day watching YouTube.

Look

I've been a lazy piece of shit for a few weeks.

My guess is that people are getting back from vacations and not worried about our product. Our peak season is the holidays and we weathered that storm. Both my managers were on vacation. I haven't ever had one of those.

But I held down an entire team for a year and almost got let go three times despite It. They put me on the other side of the freaking building by myself for two months because they didn't have the space for me.

Well I guess they listened to someone because people have been not showing up, slacking off, and generally shifting responsibility. They now have five people doing a job which I did with one other person when I started.

To get my shit done I had to learn to avoid people and their worthless conversations, complaints, and petty drama. I got more done at a higher quality than anyone by hiding in conference rooms with the lights off, in coffee shops, in bed at home when necessary.

I earned a promotion despite pissing people off and getting shouted at by our manager in a team meeting preceding his walking out. So I'd be happy to take on projects instead of fucking off all the time. I've been training the new workers while people make up excuses about personal emergencies, not being able to get to work, kids are sick, roads aren't clear...

I'm not giving up this desk space without a good reason
