The fact that a person has been convicted of a crime does not make them fair game for other individuals to perpetrate crimes against them.

No. Our "justice" system features: huge mandatory minimum sentences, such a high level of incarceration that prosecutors actively punish anyone who wants a trial instead of a plea bargain, nearly arbitrary sentences given out at the whims of a prosecutor, slavery (prison is literally an exception in the Constitution) and a lack of basic necessities, lack of meaningful employment when you exit prison, a denial of the right to vote for convicted felons, etc. The list just goes on. Lots of people think like voldothegr8, but just because someone has been in prison--even if they were convicted of a heinous crime--doesn't even guarantee they did anything wrong. As much as 20% of the prison population plead guilty to crimes they didn't commit to avoid the "trial penality", where prosecutors add so many additional charges that if they get a conviction (and in many jurisdictions, the win rate is nearly 100%) you'll never see the light of day again.

Prisons are getting overcrowded too

IMO if you haven't committed a violent crime you should get your sentence reduced. Like obviously murderers and rapists shouldn't be walking the streets, but i mean a petty mugging that wasn't violent, okay whatever you served some time let them go

American's mentality on justice is still stuck in frontier times. It's about punishment instead of any sort of rehabilitation. I'm not for murderers getting fancy cells full of videogames and then let out in 5 years, but there are plenty of lesser crimes where the object seems to be to ruin their life.

I have an employee that got caught with a sizable amount of marijuana in her car last year. She's had to take time off of work to go deal with court stuff nearly every week since then. She hasn't even been convicted of anything yet. She's missing out on wages. Thankfully she's great at her job. I'm willing to work with her on her hours so that I dont have to replace her, but not every place can do that. It seems like they're out to ruin her life over some fucking weed.
