Like, when watching The Phantom Menace, was anyone wondering who that hooded dude was and why he sounded a lot like Palpatine? And during Episode 3 when Palpatine revealed himself, were there gasps in the audience?

I've seen people on CE say that they were surprised

I've even seen people post old forum posts to Star Wars "fans" theorizing who he is.

That being said, I'm knew he was Palpatine and I was like 10 when Phantom Menace came out. It might have been because I read a book that said his name was Palpatine when I was like 7 or 8 when the special editions came out though. You'd think hardcore Star Wars fans on forums at the time would have had this information.

Yeah I think the name Palpatine was revealed in some material before the movies covered it. Same with Anakin burning in a volcano I want to say.
