Games where they focus a lot more on things like presentation, story telling, acting, character relations, environment design and basically award baiting games?

The actual gameplay and game mechanics comes off more generic, the feeling of knowing you're still playing a video game suffers. Kinda like you're playing a movie-game.

They're fine. Gaming is a vast media with more money than any other form of entertainment. If somebody wants to tell a "story game", by all means they should. Reviews should just be honest in their assessment of weak gameplay and let buyers decide whether that is a compromise worth the story.

The only place where it becomes a problem is where you get people trying to claim that one is inherently better than the other, or responding to poor reviews because their game half is atrocious with self-inflating comments about their Brilliance and how reviewers just don't get it.

Give me an example of what you're talking about. I understand the trend, I just can't think of many examples where the gameplay is generic. Like, Odyssey has all the things you mentioned, but the only other game that plays like it is Origins, so I couldn't call it generic.

meanwhile tens of millions are still playing fortnite/LoL each day.

or working on their speedrunning for stuff like classic mario games.

Yeah, see, I couldn't call those generic, cause they don't play like anything else, at least not to my knowledge. I'm sure they've had off-brand clones.

I know the war-setting FPS is still getting forgettable titles cranked out by the quarter.

I didn't like the controls much. The swimming parts made it worse for me. I can't play it but I do enjoy watching speed runs of it from time to time.

I don't think so. Thank god for E-Sports so games that respects actual gameplay will forever be a thing but I think these artsy games are here to stay. We have A-list celebrities doing not just voiceovers but are actually doing the thing where they're acting.

my point was actually that even if they're here to stay, they'll just all blend together in the end.

like i've played through the TR trilogy and i can barely remember what each of the games' plots were about. same goes for uncharted though not as bad since i've replayed them a couple of times.

how is their moment passed when lots people still play those games?
there are still hundreds of thousands playing pubg and a thousands playing dayz(both steamcharts)

same goes for games like mario 64 where streamers are still working on their speedrun or other games like it.

the only thing that still keeps a game like TLoU alive is its reputation and it'll probably be overshadowed by 2 which will be overshadowed by the next "epic" adventure and so on. at some point you'll have 10 "epic" adventures and you'll start to forget individual details like i did with the TR trilogy.

what's much better is to remember a game for both its gameplay and its story and i'd bet the former takes precedence over the latter.

anytime any of those old games are being played again, that's because the person wants to have the full experience. i mean i'm sure most people remember gone home which was nominated for tons of "narrative/story" awards, but who would really "ever" play that a second time?

This is how I feel for the most part. I feel God of War was the only good one I played this generation because the gameplay felt like it had as much effort put into it as the presentation and story.
