Why was it so disappointing?

Bethesda makes mediocre fallouts

It was a step up from Fallout 3 but a step down from New Vegas

Gutted everything RPG about Fallout.

I'm still waiting for a real Fallout 3, not some glorified Oblivion mod.

Towns replaced with settlement building making each area feel desolate and lifeless

Adding a voice to the main character removed the immersion and the limited dialogue options was a major downgrade compared to previous games

Boring side quest mostly composed of clearing out areas of enemies

Just to name a few

Voiced main character with third person cutscenes, simplified dialogue wheel that didnt reflect what I really wanted to say, too powerful gear too early, tacked on base building component all ruined it for me.

I wasn't let down by it at all. It was everything I expected it to be and more. I mean after 300+ hours I could certainly sit here and list things that were wrong with it, but I still enjoyed it enough to put that much time in

Coupled with a forced narrative with the wheres my son thing you cant get away from which detracted from the whole create your character your way stuff the other fallouts and elder scrolls games did.

• roleplaying elements are basically all gone, I don't think I'd even consider it an RPG
• dialogue is completely ruined, you get like 4 choices to say nearly the same thing, you have very few chances to do anything interesting with dialogue (lie, influence, etc)
• vague descriptions of your dialogue choices make it so it's hard to pick the answer you want
• main storyline is a mess, a lot of ideas go nowhere, it escalates & resolves way too quick, and there is a really forced faction thing towards the end that doesnt work with the story at all
• radiant missions got annoying real fast
• fewer major sidequests in Fallout 4 than Fallout 3, and I found the sidequests to be a lot less interesting in 4

overall a very mediocre game

I think Fallout 4 was pretty good, but it's just really hard to follow up something as good as 3 and New Vegas.

You have to look at the bright side though. At least it's more fun than 76.

It forced linear walking dumb hallucination sections into the main story which I hated. I enjoyed it a lot in the beginning. But around 80% it gets very bad. The world was a let down too. I was expecting much larger places that felt like actual cities but they are like camps in any other open world game you find. 8/10 game still.

Settlements instead of towns/cities

Story limits role playing

Don't like the perk system vs previous games

Otherwise a fun game, just could have been a lot better.

too much focus on the bad main storyline, took away all the time that could've been spent making sidequests and towns actually interesting. voiced protag adds to the terrible-ness as well.

i also thought the switch from janky/rough assets to round/shiny assets made the wasteland look more like an abandoned amusement park than an actual wasteland city

I loved the idea of settlements, but the execution was trash. too many and too needy for attention. really distracting.

the main highlight that I love about Fallout 4 is the existence of an actual endgame. I actually DO like running around post-game and getting into things.

It's a very, very fun game. It's just not as great of a Fallout game than others. Bethesda don't "get" Fallout.

I'm still playing the hell out of it for the settlement building alone. Still, it sucks that there are less real towns because of it. Sometimes I just want to play.

Those kind of videos that point out the obvious are pointless.

Fo3 was one of the 1st of it's kind so it gets a pass for its obvious flaws. Might as well point out how dated other game series are in their 1st entries compared to now and try to sound smart and enlightened.
