i would entertain the arguement that rap was much more raw and authentic in the 90s/early 2000s before it started to seep into the pop machine that grinds out a specifc formula of rap...

I'd say late 80s to early 00s

NWA, Ice Cube, Snoop, Pac, Biggie, Wu-Tang, ODB, DMX, etc...

Lil John and the like ruined that

I like when people say rap was more authentic when most rappers were mostly rapping about killing people and selling drugs etc.

Now you got artist who literally put all their personal shit out there. You just aren't looking for it.

You got artist saying shit like

Playing the other half of his relationship: "I wish your daddy was around and taught you how to be a man, cause you a mother fuckin coward, ***** let go of my hand"

Then his side later on of

"We in darkness, but we addicted to it
You say my son got a game and I need to get him to it
Tho I miss him I say "No, shit I ain't finna do it"
Cause Im too pissed I say "no bitch, go tell your ***** do it""

It doesn't get more raw than that in a song.

Ugh, you took the example as the rule. Ignore the literal content and just think about how hard it's gotta be to be that open to the world about how sometimes you can be a trash person. And how self aware you gotta be to see it that way in hindsight.

I feel like, if someone says something about rap not being good since the 90s, or something like that, they never really appreciated the genre and/or are parroting the opinions of others.

and I feel that way about other genres, too.

like, if you liked how rap, for example, sounded in the 90s, you're going to be able to find current stuff that's similar enough, but it's not always what's popular right now.

Id say parroting is dead on. Seeing as how there is literally no extra reasoning behind it. These people can never defend themselves as soon as people give them examples of good current shit.

My favorite rap is the old school stuff like Wu-Tang, Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Geto Boys, Beastie Boys, early NAS, etc.

Shit like Drake and Migos and all those soundcloud rappers just don't do it for me. The beats are boring and overproduced and the lyrics are usually written at a 3rd grade level. If anybody has some good recommendations for modern rap that I might like send them my way please and thank you.

Funny thing is Soulja Boy is a pioneer. His music sucked but his hustle put people on to a whole new avenue of money making with music. The avenue that is the biggest today. Sure people would if eventually figured it out. But Soulja Boy beat them all to the punch. Not to mention he also popularized selling your music with a dance. Dude was ahead of his time as a hustler. Too bad he was also a one hit wonder hustler
