i agree. i've tried several times. i put more time into it this last try, but the gameplay really is terrible.

Witcher 1 was great. Only one in the trilogy I played straight through, like 50 hours. Slow first couple chapters, but got me hooked on the whole franchise.

Witcher 1 is a good story but is largely skippable. The plot itself is mostly fanfiction because CDPR wasn't committed to going all in on the Witcher story at that point.

Witcher 1's combat is rough. Honestly you won't miss much if you just skip it and start witcher 2.
