Be glad or you wouldn't be able spend your day on Twitter looking for things to be outraged at.

Tech support sometimes. The most work I'll have to do today is to make myself a coffee

My office job during the 'slow' days is literally just me sitting in my cube for 8 hours browsing Reddit and going out to lunch once a day
does your job require a degree? you think most office jobs do?

Work in terms of physical effort? Mental effort? etc..?

I'd imagine with the risk averse culture in many organisations, there are roles which exist purely to be there in the event of <insert unlikely event with serious consequences>. In the past this may have been limited to physical asset security but nowadays could be things like as IT security or 24/7 support even when it's unlikely that anyone would be using the network.

My father used to work in this field where him and his colleagues shared a pager/beeper for emergency issues in systems he had installed and every now and then would have to dial in to a remote server at midnight to fix something or reset something. Seemed like easy money relative to the frequency at which he got called.

This. Overnight security is super easy. Watch some monitors. Walk the premise. Call cops on the very rare occurrence you actually see something going on. Crazy boring job.

It would depend on what you consider "work".
For example, some jobs are very light in actual "work", like an overnight hotel receptionist in a hotel that doesn't see much customer action. IT over night might good too. Overnight security for a few buildings might have you walking/driving around to inspect the buildings but that's it.

But on the other hand some office jobs during the busy hours of the day have a lot of "work" but to some people that's not really work, like data entry if you get to listen to a podcast or an audiobook.

There will always be some sort of monitoring jobs. Probably IT based and with a bit of knowhow you can usually create a fairly loud warning alarm for an error when it appears.

I'm the sole IT at a company of 60ish so I get about as much work from that as you'd expect. "This won't print", "that won't install", issue related to the software we use. I doubt I spend a total of an hour working per day, but also my ability to fix these problems in 2 minutes instead of Joe Stupid taking all day and making it worse seems fair to me.

How does one get so lucky? What do you do all day?

Yeah, but you usually have to do a lot of work to get them. See: my job. It's a breeze, but I had to work 100 hour weeks for a decade to make it that way.
