Considering our small force helped defeat ISIS and supported a group of people worth defending, I say we should have been there and shouldn't have left.

It's easy to blame the US for creating conflict when you don't see the result of the US not being there.

I was too young to fully appreciate the insanity of the road to war in 2003, but this echoes the push for war in Syria that politicians and the media partook in back in 2013, albeit more implicit on this occasion.

The arguments were also identical to the arguments made for war in Iraq.

I remember speaking to other Democrats at the time - even those that criticized the Iraq War - about it and Libyan intervention, and they parroted the talking points.

Now a number of Republicans who have in recent years criticized the Iraq War, the Libyan intervention, and the Syrian intervention are all vehemently defending our attack in Baghdad and hawkishness towards Iran.

Consent manufacturing indeed. It's like the overwhelming majority of people have no principles. ****'s all ****ed up.

Every action has contextual ripples and continuity - in other words, consequences, and the consequences of this are what I'm more worried about: empowerment of the KSA and Israel's geopolitical posturing, and how Iran will respond to this, and how we will respond to whatever Iran does, and so on.

I don't even care that this piece of shit is dead, what I do care about is that we are potentially careening towards an even larger boondoggle than Iraq was. Iran is not some dysfunctional Arab country barely held together by glue. The Iranians actually have a pretty competent military force and intelligence service, they're going to mobilize every proxy they have to bleed us in the region. God help us if Trump is stupid enough to escalate this into a ground war, it's going to make the Iraq occupation look pleasant by comparison.

America is fortunate that most destructive war fought on our soil was the civil war which is well outside of living memory. We also have two vast oceans protecting us from any potential peer opponent.
