- you're setting them up for eventual disappointment when they learn the truth
- you're missing the opportunity for family bonding; there's no reason to pretend that Santa Claus gives gives and it isn't just a time when people give gifts to each other because they love each other

I hold 0% resentment at my parents for "lying" to me about Christmas as a kid. I have nothing but fond memories of everything from getting my NES to my gran cooking a massive dinner for us all to school Christmas parties.

It's not really comparable though. We don't know if God is real or not; it's a matter of faith. And you can still be interested in/appreciate/use science while believing in God.

All other fiction can be used as examples of why we don't need to pretend that Santa is real. People still enjoy reading books, watching movies, playing video games, going to theme parks, etc. even though they (or the thing they are based on) are not real.

I was happily surprised when the Humble Monthly recently, along with the Crash N Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited, gave Shenmue 1 and 2

Kids should know the truth if they haven't figured it out at like no later than 10.

I feel like a normal kid should be asking their parents about it by the time they are 7 or 8, if they haven't already. A parent should not lie if they get asked the question directly either.

You can always do the spirit of Christmas type thing, but explain that gifts do not just materialize because you're good -- people have to work and pay for them.
